FROM HUSTLE TO HOLIDAY My Eye-Opening Summer in Laid-Back Europe

2025 AUG

As I wrote in last month’s newsletter, my summer jobs as a kid — clearing brush after a hurricane and assembling bulky product catalogs — instilled a work ethic that has served me well ever since. That fact was never clearer than when I later spent a summer working far from home as an intern for a company in Spain. I lived in Barcelona for eight weeks as an undergrad in college, working for a bunch of computer science Ph.D.s at Yahoo. Our

I couldn’t believe it. After spending my summers clearing brush and pulling weeds and doing all kinds of manual labor, clicking buttons on a computer felt pretty easy. Josh, you’re not in America anymore, I told myself. If you finish a job more quickly than expected in the U.S., the boss just gives you more work. This was very different.

Needless to say, the boss didn’t have to tell me again. I was out of there!

I used my free time to explore Barcelona, a massive, beautiful city with amazing nightclubs. I also went to Paris for a couple of days, where a buddy and I visited the peak attractions — the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and the Luxembourg Gardens. Many of you who grew up in family businesses would probably relate to that story. Expectations of second-generation family business owners usually go one of two ways: Either the parents expect way more out of their kids than they would of other employees and hold them to a higher standard. Or the parents go to the other extreme, giving their children a seat at the table without requiring them to earn it. The second way creates resentment in an organization, and rightfully so. Who knows where Chiro1Source will be in 20 years? But if my young son Bennett is involved, I know that by that point, he will have taken out the trash, packed boxes, and handled freight, among other jobs, before taking on any larger roles. And before assuming leadership, he would have to have clearly proven himself the best-qualified person. Many of my clients have multigenerational clinics, with a son, daughter, or both working in the practice. Some of those next- generation leaders will make major contributions. Ralph Lauren’s son, David Lauren, was named chief innovation officer for that iconic brand after his father stepped aside, and he has been credited with some breakthrough innovations.

managers were crazy smart. They were trying to predict stock prices based on the news, and they wrote algorithms that looked like something Sheldon from “The Big Bang Theory” would create. We interns were there to do the gruntwork — scanning over 1,000 business news articles and rating their likely effect on the prices of stocks they mentioned. We showed up the first day and, to my surprise, the first suggestion from my boss and my boss’s boss was, “You guys wanna play foosball?” Should we not be working? I wondered. Buzzing in the back of my head was the idea that I needed to get to work. What am I doing playing foosball? But of course, we said yes. The top boss was on my team, and we were getting murdered — the other team was up by five goals. The top boss was definitely not happy.

This is not good, I thought. I’m going to be in the doghouse all summer. Somehow, the top boss and I staged a comeback and won. That turned the tide: Things went better for me after that.

One thing is certain: Next-generation family business leaders who have been well- prepared for their roles will benefit from a lasting legacy: the unstinting work ethic of the American family business.

I dove into my work and finished reviewing all my assigned articles as quickly as I could. Nobody else was even close. The boss looked at my work and said, “You know what, dude? You did all we asked. Take the rest of the summer off.”

Making Fitness Fun for Everyone The Family That Sweats Together, Stays Together Ready to turn family time into flexing time? Staying active and healthy doesn’t have to mean dragging everyone to the gym for endless push-ups or eating kale every day. With a bit of imagination and a team effort, the whole family can make fitness fun and celebrate gains together. From turning laundry chores into speed-folding competitions to jamming out in the living room as a cardio workout, building healthy habits is easier when you’re with the ones you love and laughing!

The nation’s fastest-growing sport was born of a bored teenager’s wish for something to do during a summer vacation.

MOP TILL YOU DROP Chores may not be everyone’s favorite activity — that is, until you turn them into high-energy games that work up a sweat. Many household tasks have physical elements that can be a form of entertaining exercise. You could challenge your family to a sweep off, where everyone

When Joel and Joan Pritchard’s 13-year-old son Frank grew restless on a summer vacation in 1965, Frank challenged his dad to make up a game. Joel loved a challenge, so he and a friend grabbed a plastic wiffle ball and two ping-pong paddles and headed for a backyard badminton court at Joel’s Bainbridge Island, Washington, vacation home. They had so much fun batting the ball around that they asked a neighbor to make stronger paddles. Frank’s mom, Joan, came up with a name for the game after the “pickle boats” in crew competitions that were used to race for fun by rowers who weren’t chosen as starters. Frank later recalled, “To hear my mother tell it, they sort of threw the leftover non-starter oarsmen into these particular pickle boats. She thought pickleball sort of threw bits of other games into the mix (badminton, table tennis) and decided that Pickleball was an appropriate name,” according to a USA Pickleball history of the sport.

races with their broom to see who can clean the floor the fastest. Maybe you want to do some laundry lunges while washing clothes or see who

can pick up the most toys in the shortest amount of time. Not only will everyone be

more motivated to get their household to-do list done, but it will also help everyone get their reps in without noticing.

FIT AND FUN Staying in shape will happen naturally if you carve out time for family activities that include a little movement. Daily walks after dinner are low-impact, get everyone outside, and are an easy way to get your steps in. Instead of driving to the library or park, ride bikes to get there so everyone reaps the benefits of cycling, such as improved heart health and better balance. Your children might enjoy trying out scooters or roller skates to get around the neighborhood.

As we celebrate National Pickleball Day on Aug. 8, the sport is exploding into a global phenomenon. Tens of thousands of courts have been built across the U.S. and overseas. Participation by players of all ages rose by 85% to 8.9 million between 2022 and 2023. Pickleball even has a pro tour and a national championship tournament that drew 2,600 players and 10,000 fans in 2024. As chiropractors know, pickleball has also become a leading source of strains, pains, and injuries, especially among the many older adults who play. According to a survey of U.S. hospitals, more than 17,000 pickleball players wind up in emergency rooms every year,

STIR UP GOOD HABITS Proper nutrition is a key ingredient in a healthy lifestyle. Commit to cooking together as a family at least once a week to get everyone excited about eating right. Have the kids help plan the entree, pick out fresh veggies at the store, measure ingredients, or set the table. Making everyone feel included in meal planning helps them take ownership of their habits and learn how to prepare well-balanced diets.

more than 87% of them over age 50. Many participants face an above-average risk of foot problems, muscle strain, and overuse injuries. Additionally, many newly constructed pickleball courts are made of concrete, which any tennis player will tell you is far more conducive to injury than asphalt.

NEW STUDY SAYS PETS ARE WORTH PLENTY THE $100K REASON TO GET A PET

Most pet owners already know their furry friends make life better, but according to a new study, the value might be higher than anyone realized. Some researchers say it’s close to $100,000.

workaround: They asked people whether they look after their neighbor’s house while they’re away. That behavior is linked to pet ownership but not directly to happiness, which helped researchers isolate the impact of pet ownership.

Researchers in the U.K. aimed to measure how much happiness dogs and cats bring to people’s lives. Using data from more than 700 people, they found that owning a pet can boost life satisfaction as much as getting married or landing a massive raise. In economic terms, it’s the emotional equivalent of earning nearly $93,000 more per year. To determine whether pets actually improve happiness, rather than the opposite — happy people are more likely to have pets — the team factored in things like age, income, personality traits, and family size. They also used a clever

It’s not just a fun fact, either. Experts say findings like this could affect everything from housing laws to

public health programs. If pets fight loneliness and lift people’s moods, it might make sense to rethink rules that prevent pet ownership in some apartments and assisted living facilities. While the researchers focused only on cats and dogs, the message came through clearly. Pets matter, maybe even more than we thought. And if you already live with one and know how they benefit your well-being, the science now backs you up. That wagging tail or soft purr might be worth more than you ever guessed.
