The Grant QR cylinder range and Aerona R290 heat pump.
BARRY GORMAN FROM GRANT EXPLAINS WHY THE CYLINDER SHOULD NEVER BE CONSIDERED IN ISOLATION AND HOW GETTING THE SYSTEM DESIGN RIGHT CAN MAKE LIFE EASIER FOR INSTALLERS… Heat Pumps: The right cylinder matters
As heat pump installations continue to grow, correctly matching the hot water cylinder to the wider heating system is becoming increasingly important. The heat pump, like our award-winning Grant Aerona R290, may be the engine of the system, but the hot water cylinder is fundamental to how that system performs. If the cylinder isn’t correctly matched to the system, you can limit the performance of the entire installation before it’s even commissioned. Not all hot water cylinders are heat pump friendly One common misconception is that all hot water cylinders are equally suited for use with heat pumps. While many cylinders can technically be connected to a renewable heating system, not all have
been developed specifically for the lower flow temperatures associated with heat pumps. Cylinders originally developed for high- temperature heat sources, such as oil boilers, may perform differently when paired with a low-temperature heat pump system. This can result in slower recovery times, longer heat-up periods and reduced overall system performance. It’s not all about capacity Cylinder capacity will always be an important consideration, but it’s only part of the equation. Property size, occupancy levels and anticipated hot water demand all need to be factored into the overall system design. Modern households expect hot water to be readily available throughout the day.
Multiple showers and baths can quickly deplete stored hot water, meaning recovery performance needs to be considered alongside capacity to meet the ongoing demands of the household. Think system, not individual products Successful renewable heating installations rely on every component working together. Rather than treating the heat pump, cylinder, heat emitters and smart controls independently, Grant takes a whole-house approach to system design. Through Grant’s free-of-charge Heating Design & Specification Service, the company’s in-house team uses planning drawings alongside the heating and hot water requirements of the home to design the complete heating system
