EVOLVING FROM A BUILDING COMPANY INTO HEATING INSTALLATION, BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT, CTS HAS MAINTAINED ITS FOCUS ON CLASS-LEADING EXCELLENCE … CTS celebrates its 20th anniversary

Two decades after CTS was founded, the meaning behind its name has evolved but the company mission remains the same. Originally based on Chief Executive Connaire Thomas Stephen’s initials, today CTS stands for Connect Transform Sustain, to better reflect the company’s position as an industry leader in facilities management. Created to offer class-leading excellence in service delivery, CTS has carried that ethos from its early years as a building company through an expansion into heating installation, building maintenance and property development. “Back in the summer of 2005, I started to look at renewable energy, biomass and solar thermal in particular as the best way to tackle what seemed like inevitable fuel increases,” says Connaire. “In the summer of 2006, I completed

my training and we began with CTS Projects Ltd trading as Rozell Renewables.” Forming a partnership with Tipperary manufacturer Gerkros Boilers, the two businesses identified a gap in the market for renewables as a solution for fuel poverty. “We created a bespoke design, and called it the Cosyman,” says Connaire. “As a result, we were able to get some biomass trials into social homes. Lacking the necessary volume at that time to make the business sustainable, we then started to tender oil and gas upgrade works for social housing and began building upon that.” It took some persuasion for, what is now, CTS’ biggest supplier to open a credit account with the fledgling company. Back then, CTS kept its team small, with Connaire’s mother joining as his first employee and

other family members following in the coming years. He believes Ireland’s plumbing and heating trade has not changed hugely over the last 20 years. “We were big on renewables 20 years ago and, while the technology and regulations have moved on, it is still the same really. “I think biomass has died away but bioenergy is coming back. The gas grid is next to be decarbonised, and the short-term electric heating boom will dip back. “Policy is the slowest change of all, but hopefully the next mandate will see a shift back towards bioenergy support. It really makes sense in a largely farming economy that we use the leftovers to fuel our energy. “While 20 years ago we were one of the largest installers of biomass, I think in the future we will be one of the largest bioenergy installers too.”
