HEP V O IS PERFECT FOR MANAGING THE DISCHARGE FROM TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE RELIEF VALVES ON UNVENTED HOT WATER STORAGE SYSTEMS, OUTLINES STEVE SKELDON FROM WAVIN… HepvO: A compact solution for unvented hot water cylinders

How is Hep v O used with an unvented hot water cylinder? When used with the Wavin Tundish Adaptor, Hep v O provides a safe and compliant connection from the discharge pipe of an unvented hot water storage cylinder to the internal sanitary pipework. The system connects to the temperature and pressure relief valve (TPRV) and downstream drain, preventing foul odours and gases from entering the building. What are the benefits for installers? Using Hep v O with the Tundish Adaptor can provide a simpler, quicker and more cost-effective alternative to creating a long drainage run to an external discharge point. Its slim, inline design is particularly useful where space is restricted. Why is a traditional water trap unsuitable for this application? Traditional traps rely on standing water to create a seal. In an application that is used infrequently, this water seal will evaporate, leading to foul air ingress. For this reason, traditional water traps are not suitable for connecting the discharge pipe to the soil stack in this application. How does Hep v O maintain its seal? Hep v O uses a self-sealing membrane. The membrane opens when water passes through the valve and closes afterwards to form an airtight seal. Because it does not rely on a water seal, Hep v O will continue to function effectively during long periods where the pipework is not in use. Hep v O can also be installed within the drainage run to help protect against foul gases returning through the system as a result of back pressure.

The Hep v O waterless trap is ideal when space is at a premium.

Is Hep v O suitable for installations where space is limited? Yes. Its compact, inline design makes it well suited to installations where space around the unvented cylinder is restricted. It can be fitted without the additional space normally required for a conventional water trap, helping installers avoid unnecessary complexity. What waste pipe should be used to connect Hep v O into the soil stack? A suitable plastic pipe that can deal with intermittent high temperature discharges (such as polypropylene complying with BS EN 1451-1) supported at maximum 300mm intervals, may be used for downstream waste pipe What should installers ask for? For this application, installers should

ask their merchant for the Wavin Hep v O Tundish Adaptor Kit BV1/21. The kit includes a 32mm Hep v O BV1 valve and tundish adaptor, providing the components required for the connection. A QR code on the packaging also gives installers quick access to installation guidance while on site. Where else can Hep v O be used? The Hep v O waterless trap can be used as an alternative to a traditional water trap. It is particularly good to use where space is at a premium, such as bathroom vanity units to maximise shelf space or under a shower tray. It is also a good choice for places of infrequent uses such as guest bathrooms as it can’t fail due to evaporation or siphonage.
