LORDY LORDY, LOOK WHO’S 40!
That’s right, it’s me! I cannot believe I am officially a quadragenarian, which is apparently what they call those of us between the ages of 40 and 49. I guess I’m in the beginning stages of adulthood now, where metabolisms slow down, hair turns gray (or disappears entirely), and I’ll soon start using phrases like “back in my day.” Ah, the joys of becoming “wiser.” Reaching 40 feels like crossing a bridge from youthful exuberance to moments of “Where did I put my reading glasses?” Suddenly, I notice mysterious aches and pains that seem to pop up out of nowhere. Comfortable shoes and heating pads have become my new best friends, and I am fully committed to rocking comfortable sneakers instead of heels with any outfit. Fashion meets functionality, right? But let’s not dwell on the creaking joints and unexpected groans that squeak out when I stand up. No, let’s celebrate the absurdity of it all. I have collected a treasure trove of “I can’t believe I just said that” moments and my superpower is having a fairly consistent 9 pm (or earlier) bedtime— wild nights, I tell you. Turning 40 means I am (somewhat) a seasoned expert in the game of life. I have survived questionable fashion trends, cringe-worthy hairstyles, and the awkwardness of my teenage years. Now, people expect me to be a responsible adult who has life all figured out. Ha! The joke’s on them. I feel old enough to know better, yet still young enough to do it anyway. So, join me, all my fellow youthful-at-heart comrades,

and raise a glass (or several). Let’s toast to the gray hairs (or artfully salon-dyed ones), fine lines (or lack thereof, thanks to Botox ® ), and the wisdom that (supposedly) comes with age. Let’s not forget the importance of embracing the next chapter with open arms. Turning 40 does not mean I will stop having fun or pursuing my dreams. If anything, it is a reminder to take life a little less seriously and cherish every moment. So, here is to aging disgracefully, laughing uncontrollably, and enjoying the ride. May my sense of humor stay intact, may my laugh lines deepen, and may my spirit forever remain young at heart. And as we celebrate, don’t forget to enjoy this month’s issue of Texarkana Magazine . It is filled with the Hall of Famers of my childhood, current Texarkana legends, and inspirational stories that make the future look bright. Cheers to us!

I n recent years, the rise of YouTube has revolutionized the way people consume and create content online. With over two billion logged in monthly users and countless hours of video uploaded every minute, YouTube has become a global platform where individuals and businesses alike can share their ideas, stories, and expertise with the world. What was once a simple video sharing website has now evolved into a thriving ecosystem of diverse content creators, giving birth to an entirely new industry. YouTube businesses are
famous happened organically when they began sharing their passions with the world. Matt Cornelius, who you may know as the man behind the lens of Texarkana Magazine , started the Cornelius Creations YouTube channel in 2016 as a platform to showcase his custom carved tomahawks. The tomahawks found relative popularity among knife enthusiasts and people seeking one-of-a-kind gifts for loved ones. However, the channel really took off toward its viral status when Cornelius began uploading tutorial videos on how to carve wood
enterprises that leverage the power of the platform to generate income, build brands, and connect with audiences on a massive scale. In this fast moving digital age, “going viral,” a phrase we often hear thrown around, can happen quicker than the time it takes to refresh your browser. For three of Texarkana’s very own, becoming YouTube

To Cornelius’ knowledge, he was one of the first content creators of his kind on YouTube. “There were a few power carvers on YouTube, but none really taught how to carve with a Dremel style tool.

When I published a video on how to carve letters with a rotary tool, my channel really started taking off,” said Cornelius. Evolving from a place to feature his work to a space where he could share his gift of teaching is where Cornelius found his passion. “I saw there was a market for teaching, so I planted my footing there and everything seemed to fall into place with a little determination and hard work,” he said. Currently, his channel comprises wood power carving (using an electrical tool to carve), leather work, and laser engraving. Cornelius feels his channel has morphed into an art/ do-it-yourself channel, which allows him to share his talent around the world and brings him a deep sense of fulfillment. “I am inspired to help people find their creative thumbprint on the art they are called to do.” Cornelius’ advice to someone interested in starting their own YouTube channel can be broken down into these three steps: “Pick your niche. If it’s not your passion, you will burn out.” “Add value to your niche by teaching other people. Find the problem people are having and help them solve it.” “Be consistent. Work on your skills, work on your talent.” “The fastest way to fail is to seek out fame,” Cornelius said. “Fame is like a flame. It goes away. Be a person of impact and bring impact to people where they are. Being famous will get you nothing but a false sense of security. If you are moved by people’s praise, you will be moved by their criticism.”

While Cornelius Creations is on the “edutainment” side of YouTube, Texarkana natives, Mark and Matt Peyton have honed the art of entertaining their audience in the midst of the storm. Drawing inspiration from fellow vloggers, Casey Neistat and Logan Paul, Mark and Matt Peyton created their YouTube channel in 2017, hoping one day it would become an income generating entity. For those who are less familiar with the concept, a vlogger is a person who regularly posts short videos to a video blog or video log. Mark and Matt began making videos about daily happenings in their lives, but without a specific direction or focus, their channel eventually fizzled out and took a three-year hiatus. In 2020, Mark and Matt found themselves back in Texarkana at their parent’s house after being sent home from college and work during the COVID-19 quarantine. “We decided to dust off our cameras and start making videos again,” Matt explained. “One month in, we were invited on a storm chase with Mark’s friend Chad. He had heard we were creating again and thought a storm chase would make for good content.” Chad was on to something, because that video, to date, has over 18 million views. “We ended up inside a 400 yard wide tornado in Bowie, Texas, and we were hooked!” A passion ignited inside the Peyton brothers like a whirlwind (pun intended) and they began to cultivate personas that would entertain their now enormous and ever- growing audience. Known as “The Trio,” Mark, Matt, and Storm Chaser Chad have a number of different catch phrases and nicknames that their audience has come to expect in each episode. “We are known for having a good time and keeping the energy high for the ‘Nado Gang’ (our viewers) while feeding off the adrenaline rush of a storm and also a little bit of ‘Nado Juice’ (Red Bull),” said Matt. What started out as a daily vlog has developed into something much more impactful than the brothers could have ever imagined. “Because of the success of our videos, we have had the opportunity to assist in disaster relief along the way. To be able to give back to the communities that have been painfully impacted by storms is something we could not foresee when

we started our channel, but is one of our proudest accomplishments,” said Mark. Three crucial pieces of advice these adrenaline junkie brothers would share with anyone inspired to start their own entertainment YouTube channel are as simple as the following tips: “Start creating videos and don’t stop creating videos.” “Take it one video at a time and never stop learning.” “Create, Create, Create!” With a tenacious drive to create and a belief you can accomplish anything if you are willing to put in the work, the Peyton brothers have now found themselves in the eye of a hurricane and do not see their channel slowing down anytime soon. “We have now created a second channel called @MarkandMatt that is a throwback to how it all began for us on YouTube. We are applying all we have learned on our journey thus far and firmly believe it will be our most successful venture yet,” said Matt. Albert Einstein once said, “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.” Our YouTube famous locals, Matt Cornelius and the Peyton Brothers, are using their platforms to enrich lives and be of value to everyone who comes in contact with their online space. The future is wide open and is theirs for the taking.

THE CITY OF TEXARKANA, TEXAS, LAUNCHES NEW MyGOV TXK INITIATIVE TO EMPOWER RESIDENTS AND PROMOTE CIVIC ENGAGEMENT BY DAVID ORR
H ave you ever encountered an issue in your neighborhood, like a malfunctioning streetlight, an obstructed stop sign, or an unkempt property, and wondered how to report it? The City of Texarkana, Texas, has heard your concerns and is committed to improving the way residents communicate such problems. Introducing MyGOV TXK—a groundbreaking tool, designed to simplify the reporting process and keep you informed about the actions taken. This innovative initiative aims to enhance resident involvement and facilitate a cleaner, safer, and more vibrant city. Texarkana’s MyGOV TXK is set to launch this summer, offering residents a user-friendly online platform accessible through texarkanatexas.gov . By clicking on the “MyGov” section, you can easily submit requests to report various issues, including litter, substandard structures, right-of-way violations, and much more. Once you provide your contact information, you will receive regular updates on the progress made toward resolving the problem. Alternatively, you can choose to remain anonymous if needed. Additionally, this system streamlines the development process for new businesses by offering online contractor registration and permitting services. In line with promoting community involvement, the City of Texarkana encourages residents to participate in its board and commission activities. By visiting www.ci.texarkana.tx.us/370/Boards- and-Commissions , you can explore the current list of boards and commissions, along with their descriptions, term dates, duties, residency requirements, and meeting schedules. Some positions may require specific skills or knowledge, as well as residency in particular areas, while others do not. It is important for board, commission, and committee members to attend scheduled meetings regularly. Even if the position you are interested in is currently filled, the city encourages you to apply, as your application will be considered by the city council for the next available vacancy. Texarkana is dedicated to fostering a strong partnership with its residents through the MyGOV TXK initiative and active involvement in advisory boards and commissions. Together, we can build a thriving community where issues are promptly addressed and residents’ voices are heard. Let’s work hand in hand to make Texarkana an even better place to live, work, and play.

Just like the food we serve, Virgin Foods began organically. Keeli was working as a private chef prepping for local families. OUR STORY Texarkana Funeral Home began in the days when the downtown area was the thriving heart of the city. The downtown Federal Building was only four years old and what we now know as the Perot Theater was referred to as the Saenger Theater. The year was 1939 and Howard Fuqua along with Harry L. Everett established Texarkana Funeral Home on 6th and Main Streets in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Downtown Texarkana. The staff worked hard, establishing a
reputation built on trust, resulting in more and more families choosing Texarkana Funeral Home to guide them through their time of need. December 1966, Texarkana Funeral Home opened a new larger facility on Texas Boulevard. Thomas H. Fuqua Jr. joined the team and with the help of Robert D. Cowley Jr., the Fuqua and Everett families continued to provide the area with sound advice and caring service at times of personal loss. Soon Texarkana Funeral Home became the largest funeral home in the four states region.

J unior golf has gained significant popularity in the United States, captivating young golfers and providing them with a competitive platform. It serves as a nurturing ground for budding talents to hone their skills, compete at various levels, and even secure scholarships for college. Over the years, participation in junior golf has witnessed a remarkable surge. According to the National Golf Foundation’s report, in 2022, approximately 3.4 million junior golfers engaged in golf-related activities across the United States. On July 11, 2023, 30 talented junior golfers from the Texarkana region will seize the opportunity to elevate their game. Texarkana Country Club and Northridge Country Club will once again host the Texarkana Children Charities Open, part of the All-Pro Tour (APT) and Women’s All-Pro Tour (WAPT). As a renowned professional golf tournament series spanning the mid-south United States, the APT raises funds for local charities and paves the way for aspiring young professionals to pursue their dreams of making it to the illustrious PGA Tour. Remarkably, several prominent PGA Tour players, including the world’s number one-ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler, helped launch their careers on the APT. Traditionally, professional golf tournaments commence with a Pro-Am event on Mondays, granting generous donors and sponsors the unique
experience of playing alongside professional golfers and briefly stepping into their shoes. This year, The Farmers Bank & Trust Junior Pro-Am has been introduced, offering talented local kids who earned invitations through their skills the chance to embrace the same opportunity. The Junior Pro-Am was conceived through the partnership of Mark Van Herpen, Chairman of the Texarkana Children Charities Open, and Fred Meisenheimer, Director of Red River Junior Golf. Van Herpen expressed his enthusiasm for expanding the tournament’s outreach within the community, stating, “We are always looking for new opportunities to grow our tournament and expand the reach to more people in the community. This new Junior Pro-Am will allow us to reach another segment of the community that otherwise may not know about the tournament or the organizations it benefits.” Meisenheimer is responsible for the logistics of the tournament. Explaining his motivation, Meisenheimer stated, “Having two boys deeply passionate about golf, I found myself shuttling them to Dallas and Little Rock for tournaments. I wanted to create a unique experience for my boys and other kids who play here in Texarkana.” Eagerly anticipating the event, eight-year-old Micah Glick shared his excitement, “I can’t wait to see the skills of a professional golfer and learn from them.” Ten-year-old Owen Peek added, “Meeting a

pro golfer who might one day play on TV is exciting!” Eight-year-old Buck Hawkins commented, “I want to see and learn from a pro. I want to improve and be a pro. I want to travel all over the world!” Achieving excellence in junior golf demands dedication, hard work, and an unwavering love for the game. Eleven-year-old Gabi Nevels, who plays at Texarkana Golf Ranch, shared her rigorous practice routine, saying, “I practice a lot. I play 18 holes three days a week and at least nine holes another day.” It can be challenging, but with the right mindset, training, and support, junior golfers can make strides and accomplish their goals. Excelling in junior golf, however, has its challenges. Golf is a multifaceted sport requiring technical proficiency in various aspects, including the full swing, short game, putting, course management, and mental fortitude. Junior golfers must dedicate ample time and effort to practice and refine these skills to thrive as competitive golfers. Lane Witten, a nine-year-old golfer, shared, “I practice four days a week, attend weekly lessons, and hit balls into a net at home.” To succeed, junior golfers must cultivate resilience, focus, and the ability to perform under pressure. Golf also requires a substantial time commitment, extending beyond the duration of the five-hour rounds. Aspiring golfers must strike a delicate balance
between school, training, and a tournament schedule that often involves travel. Twelve-year-old Sophia Gavriel offered insight into her schedule, stating, “I have lessons in Dallas twice a month, and I practice every afternoon I can in Texarkana.” Gavriel, who also competes in tennis and basketball at a high level, understands the challenges of managing multiple commitments. Golf is not a cost-effective sport. Expenses related to equipment, lessons, travel, and tournament registrations can quickly accumulate. As players progress and refine their skills, these costs increase with new equipment, advanced lessons, and participation in larger tournaments. To qualify for the Junior Pro-Am, golfers had to compete in the Farmers Bank & Trust Junior Golf Tour held this past spring. This series consisted of five tournaments hosted at various local golf courses in Texarkana. The tournament series was put on by Red River Junior Golf, which was started in early 2022 for the purpose of bringing competitive junior golf to Texarkana. The tournament series witnessed over 50 golfers from the Texarkana area competing and will continue throughout the summer and fall of 2023. The dates for summer tournaments will be Monday, July 24, 2023, at Northridge Country Club and Thursday,

The Junior Pro-Am will showcase a diverse array of junior golfers from the Texarkana region. Several players from the TISD and PGISD golf teams recently participated in their respective State High School Championships. Others, like Alex Hammonds, have just returned from competing in Scotland at the US Kids European Championship. Numerous golfers like Molly and Roman Phillips have succeeded in regional tournaments spanning Northeast Texas and Southwest Arkansas. The Phillips siblings have competed in five North Texas PGA events this year, with both consistently finishing in the top ten. However, the most coveted prize awaits the opportunity to tee off with a professional golfer who may someday ascend to the pinnacle of the sport as the world’s number one-ranked player. Noteworthy APT and WAPT alumni who subsequently triumphed on the PGA and LPGA Tour include Alexa Pano, Grace Kim, Gabby Then, Will Zalatoris, Cameron Young, Ryan Palmer, Jimmy Walker, Bubba Watson, and, once again, the current world’s number one golfer, Scottie Scheffler.
