KEEPING IT GOING: Moving Beyond Survival Mode

Think About It. Talk About It.

1. When you were a boy, which men did you look up to? Were they “successful,” “strong,” or “spiritual” men?

2. What would you say are the essential qualities of being a real man?

3. What was your relationship with your biological father like? Was he pres- ent, or was he missing in action? Was he stable, or was he messed up? Did you ever have a step-father or a foster father? If so, what were they like?

4. Looking back, what effect has your own “father problem” had on your life?

5. Are you a father yourself? If so, how well are you doing at that role? What could you do better or differently while you’re incarcerated? How could you help your kids feel more secure and know that you truly love them?

Prison is hard. If someone tells you it’s not, they are not telling the truth—to you or to themselves. Having God in your life is a good thing, but it doesn’t make prison easy. If you think it will, you should think again, like Dan did:
