6: Keeping It Going: Moving Beyond Survival Mode
One of the things that these guys turn to as they deal with these frustra- tions is . . . each other. God has wired us for relationship, for true com- munity. God invites us (in fact, he commands us) to be there for one another—to build each other up, encourage each other, hold each other accountable, comfort each other, teach and coach each other, and tell each other the truth both when it’s sweet and when it stings. In a word, God calls us to love each other—to be part of a band of brothers. If you’ve ever experienced it, there’s nothing better than to be sur- rounded by a band of brothers who will pick you up when you’re down, who will gently bring you down when you get too full of yourself, who will have your back when you’re under attack, and who will protect your confidences. The guys who do well spiritually in prison find trustworthy friends who will be part of their band of brothers. Still, sometimes even our band of brothers lets us down. And that can be really frustrating, challenging, even devastating.
