A city that’s always en- joyed being at the cen- tre of attention has a good reason to cel- ebrate this winter. That’s because 2025 marks the 400 th an- niversary of the founding of New York, or New Amsterdam as it was called at the time, when it was just a small settle- ment on the banks of the Hudson Riv- er that would grow to become the world metropolis. New York is shining brighter than ever this winter – with lights, music, exhibitions and festive charm that creates movie scenes on every corner of this legendary city that’s been glistening for 400 years CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS From historic jubilee to Christmas magic
From the very outset, it was a meeting place for the worlds of millions of immi- grants seeking a new start through its port. Every generation has left its mark on the city’s architecture, language, cui- sine, music and energy. Times Square will host a huge jubilee concert in December. Under the heading “Founded by Broadway Live”, it will see Broadway stars perform as part of a musical story
of the city’s history. The city’s museums, galleries and parks are also offering spe- cial programmes – from interactive in- stallations about New York’s earliest days to guided walks through the places where its first harbour was created. However, if there’s a time of year when this city turns into a fairytale, then that period is the holiday season. The instant the Rockefeller Center’s Christmas tree lights are turned on – at 7pm on 3 rd De- cember – the light that marks the start of New York’s Christmas festivities is al- so lit symbolically. To the accompani- ment of the song Let it Snow and the aroma of hot cocoa, more than fifty thou- sand fairy lights create a scene that’s been seen millions of times on film, but it’s all even more magical when seen up close.
