traversing this part of the city an experi- ence that’s more interesting than shop- ping itself. If you want to experience the holidays like a local, head to Brooklyn’s famous Dyker Heights neighbourhood, where residents compete to decorate their home in the most beautiful way, turning the ar- ea into a veritable openair exhibition of Yuletide imagination. And the drive back to Manhattan reveals a postcard scene that never gets old, with the city’s night- time skyline dominated by the lights of the Empire State Building in the colours of the holiday season. December in New York isn’t all about the lights, of course. The city lives in the rhythm of holiday season shows and mu- sic: the legendary Radio City Christmas Spectacular, featuring the “Rockettes” precision dancers, brings a dose of nos- talgic elegance to each year’s celebrations, while Broadway offers special Christ- mas editions of musicals. Central Park is transformed into a winter oasis for walk- ing and taking pictures, while the aro- ma of roasted chestnuts and hot choco- late abound. And it all has even deeper meaning this year, with celebrations of the city’s 400 th anniversary ensuring every decoration, every song and every light forms part of a bigger story about a place that’s always been more than a city and has long sym- bolised openness, energy and endless possibilities. And that’s why you don’t need to think too much about where to go as the end of the year approaches, be- cause New York is celebrating its very existence this winter, and everyone is invited. HOW IT ALL BEGAN New York’s story began back in 1624, when a group of Dutch settlers from the Dutch West India Company arrived on the island that would later come to be known as Manhattan. They formed a small trading settlement known as New Amsterdam and established a port for the exchange of goods, spices and furs. The name New York was first used in 1664, when the English took over the col- ony and renamed the city in honour of the then Duke of York — the future King James II.
