NEW ERA OF THEATRE Broadway on the big screen Merrily We Roll Along is hitting cinemas worldwide and raising a question: is the digital audience also changing the way we engage with theatre? T he worlds of theatre and film are once again merging this December – with cinemas screening a recording of the hit Broadway play Merrily We Roll Along, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez. And this project forms part of a broad- er trend of transforming major theatrical productions into cinematic events. The musical Merrily We Roll Along was originally authored by Stephen Sond- heim in 1981. The plot unfolds in re- verse chronological order, following three friends from the collapse of their friend- ship all the way back to the start of their careers. With this interpretation, director Maria Friedman has managed to present what many critics are dubbing “the most intimate interpretation of Sondheim to date”. The play was revived in 2023 on Broadway and received critical acclaim as “a renaissance for a new generation”. The recording of the show will be screened in cinemas worldwide from 12 th December and will be available on streaming platforms as of next year. “I didn’t think people worldwide would be able to watch this live — now they can, and that’s the privilege of theatre today,” said Daniel Radcliffe speaking to Variety. The phenomenon of transferring thea- tre plays to the screen became more pro- nounced during the pandemic, when millions of viewers were enticed by pro- jects like Hamilton on Disney+ and Lon- don’s National Theatre Live production of Frankenstein. Merrily We Roll Along thus continues this trend, while it also shows how much the digital audience is becoming an integral part of contempo- rary theatre - not as a replacement, but as an extended auditorium. Broadway remains Broadway, but now it has an extra row of seats – a virtual one.
