After set- tling in with the Metkayina clan, Jake and Neytiri’s family struggle with grief as they mourn the loss of eldest son Neteyam. They soon encounter a new and aggressive tribe called the Ash Peo- ple, while the conflict between Pando- ra’s natives and alien invaders escalates with devastating consequences. As with the first two productions, Cameron on- ly briefly explained the plot to the audi- ence, though he did announce numer- ous innovations when it comes to visual effects. Avatar: Fire and Ash is a direct continuation of its predecessor Avatar: The Way of Water, which hit cinemas in late 2022. Following the premiere of the third Av- atar film, Cameron will begin adapt- ing Joe Abercrombie’s novel The Dev- ils. There is also speculation that he will continue working on a project related to the atomic bomb, which will present the story from a Japanese perspective. A third of Avatar 4 has already been shot, but production won’t resume until late summer 2026. The franchise’s 4 th and 5 th instalments are scheduled for release in 2029 and 2031, respectively.

With this winter’s release of the third instalment in the Avatar franchise, Cameron will take top spot on the list of the all-time most profitable film di- rectors, a record currently held by Ste- ven Spielberg. Cameron’s creations have to date banked an incredible 8.7 billion dollars worldwide, and with this sequel almost certain to earn over two billion dollars, just like its predecessor, he is set to become the only director to have made four films that have exceeded the two-billion-dollar mark.
