1. Vienna – kingdom of music Vienna doesn’t just become a concert hall in winter – it is a stage that presents the magic of Christmas. Its most famous fes- tive markets are held on the square in front of the city hall (Wiener Christkindl- markt), at Schönbrunn Castle and in the Spittelberg neighbourhood, and each has its own specific atmosphere. Vienna’s first Christmas market stalls appeared back in 1294, and to this day they still of- fer different strudels and decorations made of glass and wood. Providing a spe- cial charm are the openair concerts of classical music and the aroma of mulled wine that entices from afar. Try: Poppyseed or apple strudel Photo: Rathausplatz in front of Vienna city hall at twilight 2. Prague – fairytale bridges Prague’s festive markets, occupying the city’s Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, combine the Gothic with Christ- mas fairytales. Market stalls were first recorded here back in the 16 th century, and today they still offer stuffed sausag- es, honey cakes and ceramic figures. The Charles Bridge, with its lamps and walls, resembles some world of fairies, while vi- vacity is provided by street musicians and mini performances.
