Bones Are Very Strong! Bones keep other parts of our bodies safe. The bones that make up the skull protect the brain. Seven small bones in your neck are strong enough to hold up the head and keep it from falling over. In the chest, 24 rib bones protect your heart and lungs. Largest and Smallest Bones The largest bones in your body are the thigh bones. You have two thigh bones, one in the front of each leg. Scientists call the thigh bone the femur ( fee -mur). The smallest bone is called the stapes . It’s a tiny bone inside each ear. Special Kinds of Bones Your elbow is a joint . It’s made up of three bones. A joint is the place in the body where two or more bones meet. Other joints are wrists, knees, and ankles. There are 360 joints in the body in all! Jaws and Teeth The upper and lower jaws are bones that are connected. They’re joints, too. Teeth may be hard like bones, but teeth are not made of bone.
