Hudak woos rural vote
NEWSROOM@EAP.ON.CA PRESCOTT-RUSSELL
“Ontario can lead Canada in job cre- ation again, but for that to happen, the vital role of agriculture to our whole economy can no longer be ignored by an urban-focused government,” PC leader Tim Hudak said during a visit to Glengarry-Prescott-Russell this week. Hudak was in the region promoting the Conservatives’ Paths to Prosperity: Respect for Rural Ontario, a white paper on the economy. “Agriculture supports our overall econ- omy,” Hudak said. “In addition to being a mainstay for jobs across rural Ontario, thousands of jobs in urban centres de- pend on food processing alone. So we must overturn ten years of decisions by this government to get our rural econo- my and critical agriculture sector back in shape: lower taxes, affordable energy and rooting out a thicket of red tape.” The Tories say that if they are elected, they will reduce agricultural regulations by at least 33 per cent, and create one- window access to government, so farm- ers no longer have to deal with multiple and often conflicting rules. Examples: farmers need to consult five different ministries before building a barn; pesticide users need separate li- censes for treating their own land and treating someone else’s property, and
It is easy to see why WEEE days are so popular. The collections enable people to safely dispose of waste electrical and electronic equipment, freeing up valuable storage space and helping reduce their environmental footprint. The drop-offs also raise funds for community groups. Plus, in many cases, there is the chance to dis- cover outdated appliances that at one time were all the rage.WendyMacPherson and daughters Brooke andMorgan were delighted when this home entertainment centre from the past appeared at a drop-off held at Glengarry District High School on the weekend. The ensemble features a turntable, a vinyl LP, an eight-track player and a cassette player. The MacPhersons and Jarrett Taillefer were among the volunteers re- ceiving, and doing some heavy lifting, at theWEEE collection.
