Lyme Disease activist boosted by MP Freeman
“I thank you from the bottom of my heart that you are willing to step up to the plate and help with awareness regarding this deadly disease,” Pawlus tells Freeman. “I have never suffered more in my life than with this debilitating disease. I hope that you can somehow get awareness posters in French and English to pass around our com- munity in Argenteuil especially the schools, hospitals and other gathering places to make sure that we all know what to do and how to react in case of vector borne dis- eases, especially the Lyme ticks which are flourishing in our area.” Freeman agrees with Pawlus that “we must act now to recognize this disease and bring forward the importance of early detection. We have developed guidelines for treating people with Lyme disease, yet experts on treating this chronic disease believe that, because of the lack of proper
information, for many in North America the disease remains undetected and un- treated.” New Democrat Party health critic, Lib- by Davies, has written to the Minister of Health, putting strong pressure on the government to establish a national strat- egy to diagnose Lyme disease, to treat people who suffer from it and to better monitor this disease because of the grow- ing threat of infection across Canada. “My NDP colleagues and I are committed to maintaining an ongoing dialogue with patients, stakeholders and all Canadians to ensure better treatment and a more rapid diagnosis of Lyme disease,” says Freeman. OTTAWA | An area Lyme disease patient has been heartened by Argenteuil-Pap- ineau-Mirabel NDP MP Mylène Freeman’s support for intensified public education campaigns to warn people about the rap- idly spreading ailment. “It is my position, and the opinion of the NDP, that it is high time to enact legislation regarding Lyme disease, especially since it is one of the fastest spreading infectious diseases in North America,” Freeman says in response to a request from George Pawlus. The Calumet resident and Hawkesbury businessman has for years been pressing governments to increase Lyme disease edu- cation efforts.
