Celebrating faith, charity and the pioneer spirit gŏđŏ editionap.ca

Gordon and Allan McLean, who were ap- pointed trustees by the Congregation of The Presbyterian Church of Plantagenet. The price was the total sum of one dollar. Ray Lebeau, chair of the anniversary committee, observed that, “A church that has a strong sense of its history will have a better sense of identity to build on for the future. It is good for congregations to peri- odically take a look back to rediscover how their church came into being, what its early ministry was like and how it has grown and changed over the years.” Prime Minister Stephen Harper sent his best wishes. His message, read by Lebeau, was: “For 125 years, Pendleton United Church has been a gathering place for indi- viduals and families who are committed to upholding Christian ideals of faith and ser- vice. From the first official service in 1888, the congregation has promoted values and traditions that are fundamental to our way of life in Canada. This anniversary offers pa- rishioners a chance to reaffirm their deeply held spiritual beliefs, as they reflect upon the events that have shaped their Church’s

history and legacy. Please accept my best wishes for peace and happiness, now and in the future.” United Church members from across the area assembled to, as Lebeau said, “Take a pleasant walk down memory lane.” About 140 people attended the service and a reception. “These anniversary events were a phe- nomenal success,” said Lebeau. Reverend Phyllis Dietrich, conducted an uplifting service, with the theme, “So, Let’s Shine!” Added Lebeau: “The inspirational hymns, reception, flowers, delicious food, anniver- sary cake, congratulatory certificates and Letters, 125 th anniversary songs and fel- lowship could not have been any better. It was a perfect day that made each and ev- ery one of us very proud!” Pendleton was initially associated with the Hammond Circuit of the Methodist Church, Montréal Conference. Following a meeting at Hammond Church in May, 1914, Pendleton’s Circuit Membership Register was left behind. June 13, 1914, a devastat- RAD winners

ing fire destroyed the Hammond Church along with Pendleton’s Church records. As a result, the early history of the church was lost. In the 1940s, Pendleton joinedwith Ricev- ille and Georges Lake to form the Riceville- Pendleton-Georges Lake Pastoral Charge. The number of families on the register in the 1940’s averaged 93. It is believed that the war years had an impact on the num- ber of people praying for peace and for the safe return of their loved ones. In 1986, the first significant changes to the original building were made when a new basement was dug. In 2005-2006, the congregation banded together and undertook its “Faith Lift Proj- ect.” Senior citizens, with hammers, saws, squares and a plumb line completed a lot of the preparation work for the installation of an elevator. In 2010, the Riceville-Pendleton Pastoral Charge became a Congregational Partner in GENESIS, a cooperative comprised of four other churches: Cassburn, Hawkes- bury, Kirkhill and Vankleek Hill.

PENDLETON | Faith, generosity and the work ethic were celebrated last Sunday at a special service marking the 125 th an- niversary of Pendleton United Church. On this sweltering morning, the congre- gation was reminded of the challenges overcome by those who erected the place of worship in the late 1880s. “Imagine what it must have been like back in those early days,” reads a history of the church prepared by Lowell Blaney. “No power tools or the conveniences of what we have available to us today. These pio- neers put their hearts and backs into build- ing a church for themselves and for future generations.” The church’s history began January 5, 1886, when Henry Moffatt granted the site of the church to Alexander Wylie An- derson, William George Presley, Benjamin

Ray Lebeau, chair of the Pendleton United 125th Anniversary Committee, addresses the crowd that packed the church to mark the milestone Sunday.
