Students in 8th grade are faced with a complex challenge: apply - ing to high school in a city that has over 400 of them. Whereas most American 13 year olds go on to their local, zoned high schools, New York City’s 8th graders get to choose from an extraordinary array of options: from Performing/Visual Arts schools to Specialized High Schools to Screened High Schools to Career - Technical Education High Schools and more. When we add in religious and private school options, the range of schools gets even bigger. With a tight deadline of December 1 for the 2022 public high school admissions cycle, 8th graders and guidance counselors are under pressure to complete the admissions process in a timely fashion. Given that the choice of high school is one of the most impor - tant decisions in a person’s life --- easily, as important as where one goes to college --- students need all the help they can get in finding the perfect set of schools and applying successfully to them. The 8th Grade High School Readiness program is designed to provide that extra layer of support. touring schools and completing applications to screened and per - forming/ visual arts schools, the Grade 8 High School Readiness program streamlines the process so that schools, students and families feel supported during a hectic and stressful time. The program meets twice per week up until December 1, the deadline for public high school applications. Then, it meets once per week and supports students through the early March period when they receive their admissions decisions. The program is about a great deal more than “just” getting the right applications done well. It is about using each student’s inter - ests and goals to drive their school selection process and support - ing growth in self - organization, self - advocacy and self - presentation. The end result is a student who is more aware of what they want from their high school experience and who can enter high school with excitement, passion and purpose.

THE GRADE 8 HIGH SCHOOL READINESS PROGRAM The program meets 25 times during the school year; meeting more frequently during the Fall application process and then meeting once per week through the an - nouncement of high school admissions.
