instance judgment had gone before. The lesson seems to be that before prayer can be effectual in the time of visitation there must be the execution of judgment. Aaron’s censer was sufficient when the rebels had already been swal lowed up; while the transgression is still in process of com mittal, Phinehas and his javelin are the prime necessities. We must never forget that “the righteous LORD loveth righteous ness;” that we are not only to “love mercy,” but to “do justly,” and that the Prophet puts the latter before the former. It is of no use to pray for a remission of the consequences of sin, either in ourselves or in others, unless we have striven to put the sin away. Aaron prayed in his priestly capacity, but not less did Phinehas strike in his. We, as priests of the Lord, are to imitate them both: first of all we are to smite all that is evil with the Sword of the Spirit, and then we are to act as inter cessors at the Throne of Grace, that the transgressors may be forgiven. Wilful toleration of the evil thing, and the Divine forgiveness are incompatible. The execution of judgment is in itself a prayer, but prayer without execution is but a barren exercise. N ovember 3 “Awake, 0 north wind; and come, thou south."& Song Sol. 4:16. THE soul is likened to a garden inclosed, in which the Lord delights to walk, that He may take pleasures in the blos soms and the perfumes thereof. Two varying conditions, how ever, are necessary that the flowers may bloom and that the spices may flow forth. There must be the north wind, “which bringeth rain” (Prov. 25:23. R. V.), and the south wind, which produces warmth. Both are thè winds of God; both, in the spiritual realm, are different manifestations of the Holy Ghost. The one induces the tear of penitence, and softens and vivifies the ground with the water of life; the other fills the soul with ardent zeal, with strong desire, and with fervent love. Doubt less the latter is the happier experience for us. The hours of summer sunshine are far more agreeable than the “very rainy days” ; the southern zephyr is more grateful to our spirits than the wind out of the north. But both are salutary; nay, both are indispensable. We' should, therefore, welcome the one, and offer our meed of praise for its bestowal, as well as for the other. For could anything be more sad than that we should be a disappointment to our Lord? That He should come seeking for delight in us and find it not? Oh, those bare, cold hearts in which there is neither beauty nor scent; those lives full of drooping and withered flowers ; those wilderness souls where all is barren and bare ! How they must grieye Him Whose gardens they are. And all because their owners will not pray the prayer of the text. May the gracious and searching winds of God blow upon each one of us today. CHRISTIANITY is the Good News of Jesus Christ, Im manuel, God with us. The Gospel is not a creed, or a dogma, or a ceremonial, or a system; it is a PERSON. Christ and Christianity are synonyms; no man can possess the one without the other. A Christless man may be very “religious,” but he will be a stranger to the only true religion. Our Lord does not say He will teach us the way, the truth and the life, He says : “I am the way;” He did not declare that He had come to plant a vine, He said: “I am the true vine;” He did not promise to provide the bread of life, He said: “I am the bread of life.” “He that hath the Son, hath life; he that hath not the Son shall not see life.” The whole Gospel is summed up in Jesus Christ; for it is the good news of God made man to effect an N ovember 4 “The Gospel of Jesus Christ.” —Mark 1 :1.
