Red Pine Scale

CAUSES : Red Pine Scale is an invasive insect that feeds on the sap of red pine trees , typically introduced through infested trees in nearby outbreaks . HOW TO IDENTIFY : Look for yellowing needles , premature needle drop , and clusters of tiny reddish or tan scale insects on the bark and needle bases , especially on the upper canopy . IF LEFT UNTREATED : Infestations can lead to rapid decline and death of red pines , often within 1–3 years , and can spread quickly in dense stands . TREATMENTS : Insecticidal treatments can help in early stages . In later stages infested trees are often removed to prevent spread . Maintaining overall tree health and avoiding stress can improve resilience .
