CAUSES : The Emerald Ash Borer ( EAB ) is an invasive beetle that attacks and kills ash trees by burrowing under the bark and disrupting the tree ’ s nutrient flow .
HOW TO IDENTIFY : Look for D - shaped exit holes in the bark , thinning canopy , increased woodpecker activity , and splitting bark .
IF LEFT UNTREATED : EAB infestations will kill most ash trees within 2–4 years of detection .
