Hemlock Wooly Adelgid
CAUSES: Hemlock Wooly Adelgid is an invasive insect that feeds on the sap of hemlock trees, weakening and eventually killing them. HOW TO IDENTIFY: Look for white, woolly masses on the underside of hemlock branches, typically at the base of the needles. IF LEFT UNTREATED: Infested trees can decline and die within 4–10 years, depending on the level of infestation and environmental stress. TREATMENTS: Systemic insecticides can protect healthy trees, while horticultural oils or insecticidal soaps can be used for small or early-stage infestations.
