Anthracnose of Sugar Maples CAUSES : Anthracnose is a fungal disease caused by Discula species , which thrive in cool , wet spring conditions and infect young maple leaves and shoots . HOW TO IDENTIFY : Look for irregular brown or tan blotches on leaves , often along veins , leaf curling , and premature leaf drop . Repeated infections can thin the canopy . IF LEFT UNTREATED : While rarely fatal , repeated defoliation can weaken trees , reduce growth , and make them vulnerable to other pests and diseases . TREATMENTS : Improve air circulation by pruning , remove fallen leaves in fall , and consider fungicide treatments in early summer during wet years . Healthy trees typically recover .
