Clubs & Societies

The end-of-season dinner at The East India Club on Saturday 5 April was well attended and it was great to be able to invite a successful College 1st XV side again. The guest speaker was James Franklin (90-98) who captained the OAFC side that won the Junior Vase at Twickenham in 2003. The first Old Alleynian Sportsman’s dinner, held at the College on Friday 4 July, was well attended by players, guests, sponsors and friends, and was a fitting venue as the Club maintains very close links to the College and will do so always. Former England and Lions hooker Brian Moore was our guest speaker. The season report would not be complete without mentioning the sad passing of Roger Looker (63-70) on 18 August 2014. Roger had been Chairman for five years and a keen supporter for many more, having kept close contact with the Club ever since leaving the College. We were very fortunate that he had agreed to get involved and that we were able to benefit from his connections throughout the rugby and business worlds. He will be missed greatly. A funeral service was held at Christ’s Chapel in Dulwich in September. The Black & Blue Ball A ball will be held at the Club on Saturday 6 June 2015 to raise much needed funds for our redevelopment plans and for our chosen charity, which we are delighted to announce is the Roger Looker Scholarship Fund at Dulwich College. then we certainly gave a good account of ourselves at the dinner afterwards. If you want to rekindle that old sporting rivalry or just play golf with contemporaries then you are more than welcome. Please contact our Hon Secretary, Duncan Anderson (64 -71), via oags2013sec @ gmail.com. We have around 200 members, which is far too few as I am sure there must be many more OAs out there who enjoy competitive sport and play golf. There are two misconceptions about the Society that I wish to dispel. The first is that we want only low handicap players. Nothing could be further from the truth; our average handicap at our friendly matches and Society days is in the mid-teens, ranging from 8 to 24. The second is that we only play at Dulwich and Sydenham. The fact is we play only two of our 26 meetings there. Our 2015 fixtures can be found online at www.dulwich.org.uk/OAGS. The 2014 Season It was another eventful year for the Society with events and matches every month, thanks mainly to our Captain, Will Lewis (54-65). Will has agreed to stay on the committee for a few more years and his help is welcomed. Our 2015 Captain is Bob Butterfield (58-67) and we wish him every success. The season started well with our Annual Dinner in early March at The East India Club, where Will Lewis and George Melio (55-63) introduced Bob Deakin (42-45), who spoke amusingly about his memories of playing for the Society. The highlight of our year was the success of the Halford Hewitt team, which reached the semi- finals for only the fourth time since 1928. We had in our team David Somerville (63-69), who played his 100th and 101st matches, together with two rookies, Felix Truckel (00-11) and Hugo Avshu (01-12), who won four of their five matches. We lost narrowly in the semi-final to Merchiston, who went on to win the competition.

While golf was a minor sport for many of us at school, it becomes a major sport as our rugby and cricket days pass by. The OA Golf Society offers an opportunity to all standards of golfer to play with contemporaries in competitive matches on the best courses against other public school teams, as well as monthly intra-Society golf days. We are fortunate to play some of the best courses in the southeast at great rates, including The Berkshire, Swinley Forest, The Addington, Royal Ashdown and the three W’s: Worplesdon, Woking and West Hill. Members enjoyed playing competitive matches against old foes such as Whitgift at Tandridge, Loretto at New Zealand and Johnians at Littlestone. If we did not win a match

This year Mike Kirby (51-58) hopes to break Bob Deakin’s record 111 matches, having played 110 matches to date. This year the competition is played at Royal Cinque Ports and Royal St George’s between Thursday 9 April and Sunday 12 April. We start the
