OEM systems versus flexibility Another development in the market is the growing availability of weighing technology directly from equipment manufacturers. “OEMs are increasingly coming with built- in systems,” says Van Heerden. However, he believes there are limitations to these systems when compared with dedicated aftermarket solutions. “These are expensive when compared to non-OEM,” he says. He also points to concerns around technical support, noting that “very few of the technicians for those have any knowledge of them or how to fix them”. For Dynamic Weigh Systems, the issue is also one of functionality. Van Heerden says OEM systems can be restricted to relatively basic weighing applications. “They are limited to fairly simple weighing, which is not what many of our clients are looking for,” he says. As payload management becomes more closely linked to productivity, cost control and fleet data, the role of weighing technology is consequently expanding. For operators, knowing precisely what each machine is moving is becoming less about simply measuring tonnes and more about taking the “under” and “over” out of every load. b
For operations looking to connect weighing with existing fleet management infrastructure, integration is also becoming increasingly important. Connecting the data Customers are looking for weighing systems that can communicate with other platforms rather than operate in isolation. “We can provide both a dedicated production portal and output to third- party FMS systems, which we have done successfully with several clients,” says van Heerden. This allows weighing information to feed into broader fleet management systems, giving operators greater visibility over payloads, production and equipment utilisation. For Dynamic Weigh Systems, the return on investment is another important consideration. “The ROI on our systems is typically between three and six months depending on the application,” says Van Heerden. The relatively short payback period reflects the potential impact that improved payload management can have on operations where large quantities of material are moved continuously.
