entered into a new life of victory and power. His life was then adjusted. “ Another Bible Institute student, who was entering the field of evangelism, had surrendered her life fully to the Lord, but was discouraged and defeated and lacking in power and victory, because she thought she did not have ‘the faith for victory.’ She knew she was saved, because she be lieved God’s word in John 3:16. Finally she came to see that the faith she needed for victory was the faith she already had exercised unto salvation. She took God at His word for this and for all things, and a new life of peace and power and vic tory began for her. Her life was ‘ad justed’ by faith. “That is what God wants to do for every one here this morning, whether you are at the beginning of your experience as a student at the Bible Institute, or have completed part o f your course, or are al ready in the field o f service. Only the God of peace, by the resurrection power with which He raised His own Son from the dead, can ‘make you perfect,’ adjust you ‘in every good work to do his will.’ He can do this, and He will, as we yield our selves unto Him as those that are alive from the dead, and then trust Him fully to do His perfect work.” With fervent prayer that this high ideal might be apprehended and attained in the Institute this year, Dr. John A. -Hubbard concluded the service. Thus the Bible In stitute of Los Angeles opened with re joicing, held by the conviction that He is our confidence, who has been our stay.

to arm. Instantly, the terrible war clouds lower over all o f Europe. Statesmen are talking of the conflict that will send Europe back into barbarism. The hearts of men fear that instead o f “peace and safety, . . . sudden destruction cometh upon them” (1 Thess. 5:3 ). And that “ destruction” will be the wrath o f God upon a world that has bowed Him out of its counsels. But the prophecy of that “destruction” is bright with the rainbow for the children of God. And this is the rainbow: “ For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thess. 5 :9 ). We await the upcalling! The world awaits judgment. And'—just beyond the night of judgment—the whole creation awaits the sunrise of the perfect day! Yes, “ darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise . . . And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising” (Isa. 60:2, 3). And “he which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly: Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus” (Rev. 22:20). This article on the N.R.A. may be obtained in pamphlet form at 10 cents a copy, or $1.00 a dozen. Orders may be placed with the author. Dr. Louis S. “ Stand Still and See” [Continued from page 370]

“ There is a wonderful benediction at the end of the Epistle to the Hebrews: ‘Now the God o f peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood o f the everlasting covenant, make you per fect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.’ “Dr. Griffith Thomas often called our at tention to the literal meaning of the words in this passage translated ‘make you per fect.’ The Greek verb means ‘to adjust,’ in the sense of adjusting a dislocated joint. With this thought in mind, I want to speak on The Adjusted Life, which is the only normal Christian life—the Spirit- filled life, the ‘life that is Christ.’ “We have all longed for more power in our lives—power for service. Many years ago, I saw a statement that appealed to me: ‘Power, to its last particle, is duty/ In other words, if we will simply do our duty, and keep on doing our duty, we shall have all the power we need. I tried it, but with no success. I found I could not do my duty in certain vital matters. I found later that the statement put the cart before the horse. I never could have power by doing my duty, for I never could do my duty until I had power! “Again, I supposed that if I would serve God and my fellow men faithfully, I could experience victory over my besetting weak nesses and sins. I tried that, again with no success. I learned that victory does not come through effective service, but that effective service comes as a result of victory. “ Then came the time when God, in His infinite patience and mercy, showed me the precious fact o f our union with Christ, and I saw that the Lord Jesus Christ is not only our Saviour, not only our Lord, but our very life. I saw that victory is not something we win, but something that has been won for us by our Lord and Saviour, so that we can say, ‘Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.’ “ The victorious life, the Spirit-filled life, the ‘life that is Christ,’ is the adjusted life. There are two simple conditions of this adjusted life: surrender and faith. Sur render is our part; faith is trusting God to do His part. “ I knew a student at a certain Bible In stitute who had surrendered his life to the Lord, but was holding back on this one point: He had decided that he could never do a certain kind o f Christian ser vice. Until he surrendered that unwilling ness to the Lord, there was no victory for him. When he made a full surrender, he

PRAYER—“And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites” (Matt. 6:5 ). There are hypocrites in giving; ^

hypocrites in prayer; and hyporcites in fasting. The word “hypocrite” is taken from the stage and refers to an actor,

one who plays a part. An ecclesiastical hypocrite is onewho hides his real feel ings behind apious exterior. I under stand that some folk go to church every Christmas and Easter. “ Periodical god liness is perpetual hypocrisy.” When he gives, the hypocrite sounds a trumpet (Matt. 6 :2 ). He prays only when others are looking (Matt. 6:5 ). He is usu ally long-winded, too. Why is this ? He has not prayed since the last time he prayed in public; and one must keep up appear ances—so he seems to reason. Christ does not condemn public prayer, but ostentation in spiritual matters. Public prayer should be preceded by much private prayer. “But thou [in contrast with the hypocrite], when thou prayest, enter into thy closet.” Have you a “power room” ? I know o f no one used mightily by the Spirit, who does not spend much time in secret communion with God. I talked with a layman, who told me that a great preacher in another city spends seven hours every day in prayer and study. No wonder his fruitful ministry has al ready covered decades and established the faith of many. I know of another minis ter who seems to be slipping. What is the reason? Neglect of prayer and personal Bible study. The man who prays regularly and long
