the lower animals and nature. The animals were at the first all vegetarians, but since Noah’s day, they have been eaters o f meat. In the coming day, even the lion will eat straw like the ox. Zoologists are fond of telling us that the stomach of the lion is wholly unfitted for eating as the ox eats, and hence this passage in Isaiah must be erroneous. But the One who made the animals can change them according to His own good pleasure (Dan. 4). There will be perfect harmony between the lower animals and man. The venemous beasts and adders will lose their venom and viciousness, so that even the sucking child shall have as a plaything a beast whose bite today would cause immediate death. Well might the creation “wait for the manifestation o f the sons o f God,” be cause at that time they all will be set free from the age-long bondage in which they are now entangled (Rom. 8). V. T he U niversal B lessing of the S overeign (9 ). There will be full security throughout the world. Selfishness will be changed to love, anarchy to order, rebellion to loyalty, oppression to helpfulness, and there shall be no hurt or destruction throughout all the kingdom. There will be full knowledge, and true knowledge, because it will be “the knowl edge of the Lord.” What the world needs today, in spite o f our vaunted culture and learning, is true knowledge, the knowledge of the Lord. Only as it possesses such knowledge can it come to blessing. And this knowledge will be widespread as the waters cover the sea. No part of earth will be left without it. The cause of such a time of world peace and blessing will not be .advances in our civilization, or spread of education, or the effects of. evolution, etc., but it will be the second advent o f our Lord Jesus Christ. He who was once rejected will then be accepted; once despised, He will be hon ored ; once slain, He will be acknowledged as the true Sovereign. Lesson Questions V. 1. Who was Jesse? Who is the “ Branch” referred to in this verse? Did the Lord Jesus come as a King when He was born in Bethlehem? If His kingship was not established at His first advent, what do you conclude concerning the ful fillment o f the promise? V. 2. What trio of graces will charac terize the coming King? What kind of a Ruler do His qualifications prove Him to be? Vs. 3-5. What other position will He fill? Upon what will His judgments be based ? Vs. 6-9. What conditions will prevail in nature during the millennial reign of the King? Why do such relations not exist today (Rom. 8) ? During the reign of Christ, what relations will exist between men ? How do men attempt to bring about world peace? To what extent will these means be successful? What will accom pany the cry of the unregenerate man for peace and safety (1 Thess. 5 :3) ? What can we do to help usher in the reign o f the Prince o f Peace?
