After 50 years in the Angus business, I should have realized that this dispersion was inevitable. Yet, it is the hardest decision that I have ever had to make. Other breeders who left early in the game told me that there was a life after cows. My family and close friends have assured me that it will be alright. When George Strait sang “it’s time to say good-bye to yesterday”, I finally accepted reality.

John & Joanne Reed Family

I have had the opportunity to deal and communicate with other likeminded people from throughout the entire country, Canada and Australia. All have been a part of my development in the Angus business. Too many have passed, yet many have been friends for life. Hugh Ingalls and Jim Willson in South Dakota fanned my interest in Angus cattle and mentored me in my infancy in the breed. Bert Moore, Tom Burke and Mark Frederickson all had a profound influence on my growth and success. My wife Joanne and I have been married for 56 years. She gave up her dreams to follow mine. She has been at my side as a partner, provider, teacher, nurse and consultant. She gave me three amazing children and consequently eight fantastic grandchildren, nearly all who have been involved in Bar J Ranch and successfully showing cattle. I can’t comprehend why God brought us together but I am certainly the winner. I believe that this group of cows are as honest as you will find. From its inception, this herd has utilized AI and AHIR to select the best sires available. While phenotype was our main selection criteria early on, the advent of EPD’s improved our accuracy in making genetic selections. Genetic testing allowed us to eliminate deleterious genes and further increase accuracy of EPD’s After 50 years of selection, you will find excellent udder and teat quality, structurally sound females with muscle and volume. In addition they have exceptional carcass quality and high docility scores. They have produced one of Minnesota’s highest averaging bull sales. It will be hard to part with this special herd to which I have dedicated my life, but I will be comforted to know that they will be valuable additions to many other herds. While my influence is declining, I am elated that Jake and his family will carry Bar J Angus to the next 50 years. We are retaining all the 2025 born calves which will supply our bull sale in 2026. These heifer calves will be the firm foundation for the future. Thank you for your interest in the sale, and I trust that these females will provide you with quality genetics for your future. -John Reed

I am very excited to offer this exceptional line-up of highly proven Angus genetics and am extremely excited to see their calves perform for our customers. The cows are bred to outstanding multi-trait sires that will produce customer satisfaction across the country. For years, we’ve strived to produce balanced, multi-trait cattle that can produce progeny that are profitable across all segments of the industry. We strive to produce easy-keeping range females with enough growth, feed efficiency, marbling, and muscle to satisfy the feedlot, packer, and consumer. Every female in this sale is a female that we would have kept and calved out ourselves to raise breeding stock for our customers--any cow that has had a problem in the last year was culled from the sale. The cows are ready for viewing, please give us a call and stop by any time to evaluate the sale offering. -Jake
