Henry Chairman, History Department, Biola College granted citizenship.” El Espanol, the publication, rejected the view that papal teachings implied recommenda tions for constitutional democracy or collaboration with Communists. The organ reflects deep concern in the Franco regime over the repercussions of the encyclical. The Pope’s advoca cy of human rights, political freedom and social progress has strengthened left-of-center tendencies among Span ish Roman Catholics. Critics of Gen eralissimo Franco’s Government are citing passages from the papal mes sage to back demands for reforms. Machines capable of isolating large quantities of live viruses for research have been developed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The laboratory said that the zonal centrifuge- ma chines were also capable of isolating “ cellunar components and other sub- microscopic entities for research pur poses. The experimental work is be ing done at the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant. The new facility was organized under the joint sponsorship of the National Institutes of Health and the Atomic 'Energy Commission to solve the basic physical problems involved in the separation of small particles. An English-language ecumenical publications, the Bulletin, has been is sued by the United Church of Christ in Japan (Kyodan) to inform Chris tians “ in other lands about the main currents of thought and action in the life and mission” of the denomina tion. Medicine Men in Africa Form Professional Unit Medicine men in central African villages are forming an association ac cording to a report of a meeting held recently in Salisbury, Southern Rho desia. The medicine men, called chi- rembas, have been part of the Afri can life for centuries and have sur vived the coming o f the white man’s modem medicine. Their stock in trade consists of such items as dried herbs, bark and parts of animals. Led by the prominent chiremba, Dr. Ny- andoro, the medicine men are form ing the association to build a school to train chirembas and to win Gov ernment assistance. Jesuit Sees Flaw On Encyclical A Jesuit educator charged recently that “ calculated soft-pedaling” by translators of the late Papal encycli cal “ seriously misrepresents the mind of the Pope.” The Rev. Edward A. Conway, director of Creighton Uni versity Center for Peace Research, said the English translation of the en- cylical, “ Pacem in Terris,” is so in accurate it should be withdrawn. Father Conway said the translations amount to “ brazen” attempts to “ cool off His Holiness.” In a statement re leased by the university, Father Con way said he had discovered “no fewer than 40 faulty renditions of the orig inal Latin” in 28 paragraphs devoted to disarmament and international or ganization. He contended that the English version contained “not only mistranslations, b u t omissions of ideas, addition of others, and, espe cially in the section on the need for a world authority repeated refusal to give proper weight to the words of the original text.” He said the English version quotes the Pope as saying that continued nuclear testing “will have fatal consequences for life on earth,” while the Latin said that continued testing “may seriously endanger vari ous kinds of life on earth.” In addition to Father Conway’s criticism of the translation comes a similar criticism from a Spanish Gov ernment organ in Madrid which charged that the recent encyclical by Pope John XXIII “ is being cynically used to prove that error has been
