Homeowner’s Equity U.S. Residential Real Estate Since 1980, in Billions of Dollars
2024
$35,000
In Q2 2024, the value of household equity in owner-occupied real estate hit $35 trillion dollars, a 73% share of the total market value ($48 trillion) of such homes. The increase in equity is due to rising home values (especially during the pandemic boom), the increase of owner-occupied housing in newly constructed homes, and the rising share of homes owned free and clear (as aging baby boomers pay off their home loans). According to U.S. Census data, almost 40% of owner-occupied homes are now mortgage-free.
