Gastronomic heritage Leskovac is synonymous with grilled meats, but its culinary offer extends far beyond barbeque. Traditional specialities like Leskovac urnebes spread, ajvar chut- ney, roasted vegetables and breadcakes represent the essence of the local culinary scene, enriched with aromatic herbs and spices that are specific to southern Serbia. Representing a special experience is the local Leskovac bell pepper, which is known for its specific smell and colour, but also the area’s specific honey, which is used in both savoury and sweet dishes. Here you will enjoy in particular home- made ajvar chutney, salads with roasted peppers and pumpkin, as well as various dishes prepared at ethno-restaurants that offer an authentic local experience. Cultural heritage Leskovac is a city with a strong cultur- al tradition and a rich folklore heritage. The City is planning more than 300 cul- tural events for next year, including con- certs, exhibitions, theatre shows and workshops. Surrounding area and nature The area around Leskovac offers numer- ous natural and historical attractions. Just a few kilometres from the city are the Jablanica and Kukavica mountains, which are ideal for hiking, mountain-bik- ing and enjoying the tranquillity of na- ture. Vlasina Lake, located around an hour’s drive away from the city, offers spectacular scenery and ecotourism op- portunities. Of course, you also shouldn’t miss out on a visit to Caričin Grad, the Empress’s City, which was among the Byzantine empire’s largest and most important cit- ies. Located just 30 kilometres from modern Leskovac, on a natural eleva- tion at the foot of Mount Radan, it is sur- rounded by two rivers and represented a magnificent imperial city in the 6th cen- tury. With its construction, Emperor Jus- tinian I paid tribute to his homeland. It was a city of exquisite streets and public buildings that housed craft workshops, trade shops and two public baths... The surrounding area is rich in monaster- ies, medieval churches and archaeologi- cal sites that recount stories of centuries of everyday life in this part of southern Serbia.
