NIAGARA FALLS Niagara Falls is only around a 90-minute drive (approx. 130 kilo- metres) from Toronto, and the journey itself turns into an excursion – along the shore of Lake Ontario, through vineyards and pictur- esque towns like Niagara-on-the-Lake. And then you arrive in a place where it’s impossible to feel indiffer- ent. The power of the water falling from a height of 57 metres cre- ates a roar that you can feel in your chest, while mist and water droplets stick to your face as if greeting you. Despite being formal- ly “discovered” by French explorer Samuel de Champlain back in 1604, these falls represented a sacred site for the native people long before the arrival of Europeans. They today consist of three parts: the Horseshoe Falls (on the Canadian side), the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls (on the American side), which together form one of the world’s most famous sights. The most famous section, the Horseshoe Falls, also carries the most water – with a flow rate exceeding 2,800 cubic metres per second! This sight is best experienced up close as part of a Niaga- ra City Cruise. Bring a raincoat for this boat ride – you’re sure to need it, with mist and tiny droplets falling from all sides, but that’s all part of the magic. If you’d rather view the falls from above, clamber to the top of the Skylon Tower or visit the Journey Behind the Falls observation deck, where you can literally stand behind the curtain of water and feel all the power of nature. For the full expe- rience, plan to stay until the evening hours – when the falls are il- luminated in rainbow colours, while the spectacle ends with fire- works during the summer months.
