56 FLEMING, Ian. The Centenary Edition of the Works. London: Queen Anne Press, 2008 “a most handsome celebration” Limited edition, number 30 of 100 sets attractively bound in quarter vellum from a total edition of 406 sets. This definitive edition is the most comprehensive collection of the writings of Ian Fleming to be published, and was issued to commemorate the centenary of Fleming’s birth. The Queen Anne Press was established in 1951 by James Gomer Berry, 1st Viscount Kemsley. In 1952 Lord Kemsley appointed Fleming as the managing director of the Queen Anne Press as a wedding gift, a position he held until his death in 1964. Fleming’s literary estate acquired the press the year before this publication. From the Ian Fleming collection of Martin Schøyen (b. 1940), with his bookplate. 18 volumes, octavo. Original quarter vellum by Shepherds, Sangorski & Sutcliffe, replicating the original limited edition of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service , spines lettered in gilt, black cloth sides, red endpapers embossed with Fleming’s initials, edges gilt. Housed in the original black cloth slipcases with black lettering on spines; and in the original large black box with the author’s family crest gilt-stamped on lid. In fine condition. ¶ Gilbert F10(b); The Schøyen Collection No. 159. £6,000 [155979]

Octavo. Original brown boards, spine lettered in silver, dagger motif blocked to front board in silver and blind, red endpapers. With dust jacket. Housed in a custom Zaehnsdorf black quarter morocco folding box, spine lettered and with dagger motif in gilt. Typed letter loosely inserted. A near-fine copy, boards very slightly bowed, minor bumping to edges, in like dust jacket, unclipped, rubbed, otherwise an attractive copy. ¶ Gilbert A10a(1.1); The Schøyen Collection No. 75. £25,000 [155923] 55 FLEMING, Ian. The Man with the Golden First edition, first issue, first state, with the gun design on the front cover. This design, whereby a device was stamped to the front cover, is in line with the binding of other Bond novels. It was abandoned for economic reasons after 940 copies were produced. Consequently it is the scarcest first state of the Bond books. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover with gun design in gilt, endpapers with green and white “smoke” or “fibre” pattern. With dust jacket. Housed in a custom brown calf-backed folding box. Extremities a little bumped, head and foot of spine slightly worn, some foxing to edges, other minor marks to covers, letter and number code on front free endpaper; a very good copy. Dust jacket slightly worn at top with minor abrasion to reverse; a very good, bright and unclipped example. ¶ Gilbert A13a(1.1). £10,000 [158485] Gun. London: Jonathan Cape, 1965 in the scarce first state binding

note on the flyleaf reads: “To Leonard To Take his mind off practically everything! From Ian”, and Moore’s inscription, written during the filming of The Spy Who Loved Me at Pinewood Studios, reads, “Best wishes Roger Moore (Bond Mark III) Pinewood Studios Nov. 76”. The recipient is Leonard Russell (1906–1974), friend of the author and travel editor of the Sunday Times , who had commissioned Fleming to undertake a tour of 13 cities including Los Angeles, Monte Carlo, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. The experiences were described in Thrilling Cities . The rear endpaper has been signed by Roger Moore (1927–2017) while filming The Spy Who Loved Me at Pinewood Studios in 1976. Later inscriptions by Roger Moore (often signed “ex-James Bond”) do occasionally appear on the market, but to have a contemporary dated inscription directly related to the production of a James Bond film is rare indeed. The movie was released in 1977 to high acclaim and was nominated for three Academy Awards. This copy also includes a typed copy of a letter, dated 25 April 1961, from Fleming’s typist Margaret Anderson to the author describing “what I think of your book”. From the Ian Fleming collection of Martin Schøyen (b. 1940), with his bookplate.
