Provenance: early book label on front pastedown of “Joannis Milner A. M. è Coll. Sti. Pet. Cantabr” and his signature on the first title page, probably John Milner (d. 1705) who attended Peterhouse, Cambridge in 1668, a minor canon and vicar; early ownership signatures to title pages and p. 1349 (the opening page of the third volume); 17th/early 18th- century transcription of part of William Strode’s (1602–1644) poem “Jacke-On-Both-Sides”, with a portrait of a clergyman, to second title page verso; 19th-century notes to front free endpaper of first volume; 20th-century Swindon Public Library stamp to initial binder’s blank of first and third volumes and to second title verso, 20th-century signature of James Powell of Swindon to title pages and initial

dedicatory leaf and p. 1349; early 20th-century note of book mounted to front pastedown of second and third volume. 2 volumes bound in 3, folio (396 × 268 mm). 18th-century calf, new orange morocco labels to style, gilt rule to covers, marbled pastedowns, red speckled edges. Textually complete, with original folding plate “description of Windsor Castle”, the other folding plate “Table of the X. first persecutions” supplied in skilful modern facsimile. Integral woodcut illustrations. Spines, joints and extremities expertly restored. Occasional peripheral staining and browning, offsetting from original folding plate, small patch of paper repair to a marginal tear on pp. 591/2 affecting text without loss; short closed tear at head of pp. 673/4 affecting heading without loss, paper reinforcement at frayed extremities of pp. 717–724 with some words and part of woodcut obscured,

running central chip to pp. 707–728 with loss to lettering, second title page with peripheral repairs glancing woodcut border, paper repair at foot and fore edge of pp. 731/2 slightly affecting text, 6 cm closed tear to pp. 835/6 affecting text, chip to fore edge of pp. 887/8 not affecting text, 18 cm closed tear to pp. 1031/2 repaired at foot affecting text without loss, chip to fore edge of pp. 1179/80 with loss to shoulder note, 4.5 cm closed tear at head of pp. 1714/5 affecting text, chip to bottom right corner of pp. 1775/6 without loss, paper repair to tear pp. 1830/1 with slight loss. Despite a list of minor faults common to these editions, reflecting their extensive use, the contents are here generally fresher than usual, textually complete without any substantial loss.
