93 MACLEAN, Norman. A River Runs Through It, and Other Stories. Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 1976 “all things merge into one” First edition of Maclean’s autobiographical collection of short stories, nominated for the 1977 Pulitzer Prize. In 1992, Robert Redford directed the film adaptation starring Brad Pitt, which was nominated for three Academy Awards. In his review for Esquire , Pete Dexter commented that the titular story “is about not understanding what you love, about not being able to help. It is the truest story I ever read; it might be the best written. And to this day it won’t leave me alone”. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in silver, yellow endpapers. With dust jacket. A fine copy in very good jacket, spine and folds lightly sunned, foot of spine and corners rubbed, a few nicks to top edges and lower corners, two nicks to front panel, short closed tear to foot of front panel and head of rear panel, not price-clipped, clean and sharp. ¶ Pete Dexter, “The Old Man and the River”, Esquire , June 1981, available online. £2,000 [157533] 94 MALTHUS, Thomas Robert. An Essay on the Principle of Population. London: John Murray, 1817

91 McCARTHY, Cormac. Outer Dark. New York: Random House, 1968 “hard people makes hard times” First edition. Unlike McCarthy’s other novels, Outer Dark takes place in a fantastical setting, a twisted idea of rural Appalachia in a “world devoid of God, purpose, causality; a world where mankind appears only semi-literate and half-animal” (Geddes). Octavo. Original blue cloth-backed grey boards, spine lettered in gilt and metallic blue, author’s name in relief on black ground on spine and front cover, top edge blue, fore edge untrimmed. Neat Christmas 1968 gift inscription on front free endpaper. Spine ends a touch bumped, extremities sunned, black ground on spine a little rubbed, internally fresh and clean. A very good copy indeed in like jacket, price-clipped, spine lightly toned with tiny mark to foot and shallow chips to head, edges a little nicked and rubbed, else a sharp and clean example. ¶ Dan Geddes, “McCarthy’s Outer Dark: Existentialist Darkness as Mood”, The Satirist , 3 September 2001, available online. £1,000 [157971] 92 McCARTNEY, Paul – McCARTNEY, Linda.
