with typesetting specimens First Nonesuch Press edition, number 312 of 675 copies, in particularly nice condition and unusually accompanied by trial pages for typesetting the edition. The Nonesuch Herodotus is a superb example of book design and presswork. The trial pages contain four specimens of typesetting to tackle the issues posed by this edition of Herodotus and the commentary. The goal was to produce an edition “which shall be handsome but not unwieldy, readable for those who are concerned only with the text, convenient for those who wish to use the notes in conjunction with the text”. The four specimens, labelled A–D, exhibit various sizes and styles of type, and included is a voting card for users to indicate their preferred style. The explanatory note points to plans to publish a large variety of trial pages “for those interested in the minutiae of book-building”. Quarto. Original blue quarter vellum, blue cloth sides, spine lettered and decorated in gilt with vermiculated rules extending onto sides, top edge rough gilt, others untrimmed. Together with “Trial Pages with Herodotus”, pp. 18 (287 × 177 mm), housed in grey folder, front flap titled in red. Title page printed in red and black, wood-engraved half- title and 9 similar headpieces by V. le Campion, 9 engraved maps to rear by T. Poulton of which 7 are double-page. Spine, prone to fading, here unusually bright. A lovely, fresh copy. £2,250 [157561]

The Tiber Press was founded in 1953 and specialized in high quality silkscreen printing; this was their most ambitious project. The collaborators all “lived in New York City where they knew one another well for a number of years and followed one another’s work with involved interest. Tiber Press left the choice of partners in this project to the individuals themselves, and, in collaborating, the poet and painter were acknowledging awareness of some real relationship between their work” (as advertised in the original prospectus). The volumes comprise The Poems , by John Ashbery, prints by Joan Mitchell; Odes , by Frank O’Hara, prints by Michael Goldberg; Permanently , by Kenneth Koch, prints by Alfred Leslie; Salute , by James Schuyler, prints by Grace Hartigan. A further 25 copies were reserved for private distribution, though these were not usually signed by both artist and poet. 4 volumes, folio.
