159 WODEHOUSE, P. G. The Heart of a Goof. London: Herbert Jenkins, 1926 “i am saving them for you, to be a companion book to cuthbert” First edition, with a typescript letter signed by the author to his publisher loosely inserted. The Heart of a Goof is a collection of nine golfing stories as told by the Oldest Member, Wodehouse’s established character, the narrator of most of his golfing tales, who often holds forth from the terrace of a fictional golf club. The letter is to a Mr Askew, part of the firm of Herbert Jenkins, Wodehouse’s long-standing publishers, dated 2 November 1925 and typed on paper from the now-demolished Hotel Marguery in New York City. The letter originally enclosed another letter from “a bloke who, whatever his defects, at

any rate reads his Wodehouse in the proper careful spirit”, and concerns typographical errors in an unspecified work. Writing a year before the publication of this title, Wodehouse indicates his plans for a “companion” to his 1922 golfing anthology, The Clicking of Cuthbert , which would go on to become The Heart of a Goof . Octavo. Original green cloth, spine and boards lettered in black, golfers blocked to front board and publisher’s motif to rear in black. Rubbing to extremities, spine toned, edges toned and foxed, inner hinge at half-title cracked but holding firm, offsetting to preliminary and end matter, a very good copy with contents clean. ¶ Jasen 37. £1,250 [157382] 160 WOLFE, Tom.
