Northanger Abbey , probably the first full-length novel Austen wrote, is paired with Persuasion , her last completed novel. Octavo (180 × 115 mm). Early 20th-century green calf by Bayntun, spine with gilt-dotted raised bands, red and green morocco label, elaborate floral decoration in compartments, covers bordered with a double gilt fillet, ornate gilt tooling to board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Colour of one label slightly faded, minor scuffs to boards, a few spots of foxing to initial and final leaves, otherwise internally clean. Contemporary blue calf by Bayntun (Rivière), Bath, twin red morocco labels, raised bands and compartments tooled in gilt, twin rules to sides, marbled endpapers, inner dentelles and edges gilt. Two frontispieces with tissue guard, five black and white plates. Head of spine lightly rubbed, occasional spot of foxing to contents, but overall quite clean. A handsomely bound copy. £450 [156385] 168 BACON, Gertrude. Memories of Land and Sky. London: Methuen & Co. Ltd, 1928 First edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, “With the compliments of the author, Gertrude Foggitt, June 18 1930”. Gertrude Bacon (1874– 1949), later Foggitt, was an aeronautical pioneer and woman of science known for achieving a number of “firsts” for women in aeronautics. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt and front cover lettered in blind. With portrait frontispiece and 15 half-tone photographic plates. Spine gently bumped and cocked, rubbing to extremities, a few marks to covers, contents slightly foxed. London: Ernest Benn Limited, 1927 First edition of this immense collection of Bell’s letters, spanning 51 years, ending with her last letter from 1926, written just five days before her death. This is a nice example in the scarce jackets. 2 volumes, octavo. Original dark green cloth, spines lettered in gilt between blind rules, blind panels to front boards. With dust jacket, here supplied. Frontispiece to each and 30 other plates in all, folding map of Persia at the rear of vol. II. A few marks on front cover of vol. I, offsetting to endpapers and foxing to edges as usual, otherwise clean; a very good copy in like jackets, a little spotting to panels, extremities bumped with loss to foot of rear fold of vol. I and couple short closed tears to rear panel of vol. II, toning to flap folds. ¶ Macro 498. £850 [156921] 170 BELL, Gertrude Lowthian. Amurath to Amurath. London: William Heinemann, 1911 First edition. This decidedly uncommon and comprehensively illustrated work is the remarkable narrative of Bell’s expedition of 1909 to survey the Roman and Byzantine fortresses on the banks of the Euphrates in Mesopotamia. “Her account of her journey [is] one of her most famous books” ( ODNB ). Octavo. Original light brown buckram, spine lettered in gilt, front cover lettered and decorated in black, top edge brown, others uncut. With two-tone photographic frontispiece, and

52 half-tone photographic plates illustrated recto and verso, illustrations in the text, large folding map at end of “Bell’s route from Aleppo to Konia”. Neat ownership inscription of one Alex Pratt on front pastedown dated 11 April 1973. Slightly rubbed, neat repairs to spine ends, erased signature on front flyleaf, minor toning, small tear to stub of map. Translated from the French by Xan Fielding. London: Secker & Warburg, 1964 First UK edition of the novel that launched the Planet of the Apes franchise. First published in 1963 as La Planète des singes , the first English language version, translated by Xan Fielding, was published in the United States in June 1963 under the title Planet of the Apes . The present edition followed in January. Octavo. Original green boards, spine lettered in silver. With dust jacket. Three tiny splash marks on top edge, otherwise fresh. A near-fine copy in like dust jacket, not price-clipped, typical green sunning to spine, nick and short closed tear at head of rear panel, a bright and sharp example. ¶ Not in Bleiler, Currey, or Locke.
