Leipzig: Tauchnitz, 1850 An attractively bound copy of Cicero’s work, presented in 1856 to Arthur Mesham, a student at Exeter College Oxford, in his first term. Tall quarto (282 × 181 mm), pp. 1,460. Contemporary vellum prize binding of Exeter College Oxford, with their gilt supralibros to covers, smooth spine with ornamental gilt roll of leaves and tendrils, red morocco label, covers with gilt double rule and corner rosettes, Bouquet pattern marbled endpapers, edges red. Engraved frontispiece depicting bust of Cicero by Zschoch. A little discolouration and light spotting to vellum, but generally quite bright, mild foxing to a few leaves, otherwise fresh and clean throughout. Original green cloth, spine lettered in in gilt on red ground, pictorial design to front board in red, top edge red. With dust jacket. Illustrated throughout with line drawings by Renny, title printed in green and black. Contemporary ink ownership to front free endpaper. Spine and upper front board gently sunned, the binding otherwise sound and clean, slight spotting to fore edge, faint toning to contents, else internally fresh. The Zoology of the Voyage of the H.M.S. Beagle. London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1994 Signed limited issue, set 266 of 1,000 signed by John Hemming, director and secretary of the Royal Geographical Society. The set was printed and bound to match Darwin’s personal copy. “The five years of the voyage were the most important event in Darwin’s intellectual life and in the history of biological science” ( DSB ).
