Harrap & Co., Ltd, 1925 Signed limited edition, number 767 of 1,000 copies signed by the illustrator and issued in England, with a further 1,000 copies issued in the US. This is a beautifully illustrated edition of Fielding’s masterpiece, which, along with Joseph Andrews, “established the tradition of the comic novel in English” ( ODNB ). Large octavo (233 × 157 mm). 20th-century blue morocco, spine with raised bands lettered and decorated in gilt, covers bordered with a single gilt fillet, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed with several uncut gatherings. With 16 colour plates by Wheelwright including frontispiece. With original cloth cover panel and spine pasted to two rear binder’s blanks. A couple of marks to leather, light browning to half-title and final leaf, otherwise internally bright and clean. An attractive, generously-margined copy. £375 [157966] 201 FLEMING, Ian. Showcase presents Doctor No. Sparta, Illinois: DC Comics, National Periodical Publications, Inc., 1963 Published as issue 43, March–April 1963, of the Showcase anthology series by DC Comics, with artwork by Norman Nodel. The front inside cover shows five stills from the United Artists film adaptation, and the rear inside cover prints a biography of Ian Fleming entitled The Man behind the Typewriter . The comic is an adaptation of the 1962 film, rather than the novel, and the characters are drawn to resemble the movie actors. An important publication: this represents the only James Bond title to be issued in the traditional comic- book format during the author’s lifetime. Comic book format. Illustrated coloured wrappers. The title and theme of this novel are taken from an Igbo proverb: “However famous a man is outside, if he is not respected inside his own home, he is like a bird with beautiful feathers, wonderful on the outside but ordinary within”. Octavo. Original light green boards, spine lettered and decorated in green and blue. With dust jacket by Janina Ede. Front board a little bowed, one corner just bumped, faint mark to fore edge and rear free endpaper, trivial foxing to front free endpaper. A near-fine copy, covers bright and clean, in like jacket, head of spine rubbed, rear panel a touch soiled, edges a little creased, foot of front flap fold nicked, very bright. £500 [157788] 198 FELLOWES, Daisy. Sunday, or a Working Girl’s Lament. Monaco: Imprimerie A. Chéne, 1930 First edition, number 52 of 200 copies printed, each signed by the author, this copy additionally inscribed on the limitation page, “To Catherine with fond and enduring affection”. The author, Daisy Fellowes (1890– 1962), was a notorious French socialite and heir to the Singer sewing machine fortune. She was a key high- fashion icon of the period, serving as the Paris editor of Harper’s Bazaar, and her patronage of Schiaparelli and Cartier has been credited with their survival in the unstable 1930s.

This is the second book in Fermor’s celebrated travel trilogy that recounts his walk from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople, following A Time of Gifts published in 1977. Octavo. Original blue boards, lettering to spine and bird design on front board in gilt. With dust jacket designed by John Craxton. With a double-page map. Ownership inscription to front free endpaper and typed errata slip loosely inserted.
