Contemporary panelled calf, spine with blind ruled raised bands, brown morocco label, gilt floral motif to board edges, edges sprinkled red. First work with engraved vignette title page, third work with title page printed in red and black, 5 engraved plates, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces. Ownership inscription “P. Thacker G.C.C. A.B. 1729” to front free endpaper, perhaps Peter Thacker (b. c .1689), scholar, who obtained his Bachelor of Arts at Gonville & Caius College in 1708/9, partially removed subsequent inscription below; last leaf with early attempt to copy out the first line of text. Joints and inner hinges cracked but firm, a little loss of leather to spine ends, two corners worn, paper flaw to title page of first work, light age browning to third work, very occasional marks to contents, otherwise internally clean; third work lacking engraved frontispiece. Qingdao youlan shouce (“A Handbook to Qingdao”). Qingdao: Qingdao ribao she, 1957 First edition, sole printing, of this genuinely hard to find Mao-era tourist guide to the resort city of Qingdao, demonstrating that leisure travel and commercial advertising, including for the city’s famous Tsingtao Beer, remained alive and well under Communism. Of the 10,000 copies originally printed, few have survived: WorldCat finds two and none are traceable in commerce. Octavo. Original illustrated wrappers, front cover lettered in yellow and white with vignette of beachgoers, advert for Laoshan Qishui (Laoshan Soda Water) on rear wrapper. With 8 half-tone plates, 3 folding maps, vignettes and plans in text; pp. 21 of advertisements, many printed in red or blue. London: Duckworth, 1925 First edition, in a bright example of the jacket and scarce thus.
