Our annual Election Day Service was held at St Botolph-without-Bishopsgate on 25th June 2025 and was led by the Honorary Chaplain the Revd Dr Ben Sargent, with the sermon being given by this year’s Select Preacher the Dean of St Paul’s, the Very Revd Andrew Tremlett. The Dean’s sermon was based on 1 Corinthians 3.4-11 and the theme of foundations and what we choose to build on them. While we are called to be good stewards of resources entrusted to us, this involves building on foundations laid by those who came before us, and handing these resources on to our successors in due course. This point was made with reference to the rebuilding of St Paul’s Cathedral after the Great Fire of London and the role played in this not only by the architect Sir Christopher Wren, but also by the team of masons and the father-and-son pair of sculptors who led it. The Dean’s most fundamental message was that the Christian faith offers an unshakeable foundation: a changeless God who cares for humanity, even amid shifting loyalties and societal upheaval. The congregation enjoyed renditions of Panis Angelicus by César Franck and Labi Siffre’s Something Inside So Strong , arranged by Craig McLeish, which were sung beautifully by a mixed choir of pupils from Colfe’s School, Prendergast School and Prendergast Vale School.
