California State University General Education Requirements 2017-2018 A minimum of 48 semester units in General Education are required for a degree: 9 semester units must be at the upper division level. This pattern is designed to satisfy the 39 units of lower division general education requirement to any of the CSU campuses. A course may be listed in more than one area, but can be used to satisfy the requirement in only one area. The “Golden Four” (Areas A1, A2, A3, and B4) must be completed with grades of C- or better.
