In his 14-chapter story, Alice is now 50 years old. One day she hears a knock on the door and when she opens it she finds a cigar box on the floor with a label that simply says “Alice”. The box starts to talk to her and inside she finds a key that fits the grandfather clock in her house. When she unlocks the door she sees a tiny fleck of light at the bottom but when she peers inside she is suddenly grabbed and she finds herself falling down a long hole. She’s back in Wonderland again, but something has changed: not only is she is back to her young self half of her is now the Red Queen. As Smith’s story unfolded, with Alice meeting characters from other children’s fairy tales and stories, he and Jayne combined their creative talents to begin their new art collection. It took nine months to complete – 36kg of clay, six eight foot sets, 36 maquettes, and more than 5,000 individually made objects. And each of the items was painstakingly staged and placed over days, sometimes weeks, in his studio so that he could commit the scene to canvas.
