Alliance Machine Systems Acquires Systec, Automatan Spokane, Washington based Alliance Ma- chine Systems International, a manufacturer of automated paperboard packaging equip- ment, announced it will acquire Systec Corpo- ration and Automatan, LLC. Alliance said the strategic alignment will enhance production efficiency and quality of paperboard packag- ing automation and material handling solu- tions for the corrugated and folding carton industries. Alliance is a part of Barry-Wehmill- er, the 140-year-old, $3.6 billion global capi- tal equipment and engineering solutions firm led by CEO Bob Chapman and President Kyle Chapman. “Alliance Machine Systems International is thrilled to acquire both Systec Corporation and Automatan, LLC, marking a significant milestone in our journey,” said Marius Batrin, Alliance President. “After years of successful collaboration, Alliance, Systec and Automatan have decided to become part of the same business structure. Suarez is a senior R&D scientist, Ghosh is R&D man- ager, and Paulsen is senior director of Research. Hart, who organized the March special issue featuring peer-re- viewed content from the 2023 TAPPI PEERS/IBBC confer- ence, was a Research Fellow for Smurfit WestRock before he passed away in May 2024. “Suarez’s team’s research examined pulp from non- woods like wheat straw and sugarcane bagasse using a holistic life cycle analysis approach to project environ- mental performance in packaging products,” said TJ Ed- itor-in-Chief Douglas Coffin. “The results can help mills make decisions about which fibers ensure a low carbon footprint.” Suarez will also receive TJ’s Honghi Tran Prize. The $3,000 cash prize is endowed by Professor Emeritus Honghi Tran of the University of Toronto, the author and co-author of more than 80 papers published in TJ. Tran es- tablished the award in 2019 as a $2,000 prize to encour- age and reward the publication of high-quality research in TJ. It was recently increased to $3,000. The Best Research Paper Award and Honghi Tran Prize will be presented at TAPPICon, May 4-7 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The 2024 runner-up to Best Research Paper was “Alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) sized paper reversion due to oxida- tive photodegradation,” authored by Yao Ntifafa, senior re- search scientist at Smurfit Westrock, with co-authors Yun Ji and Peter W. Hart. Ji is professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of North Dakota. The runner-up paper was part of a special Papermak- ing Additives issue organized by Editorial Board Member Scott Rosencrance of Kemira and Guest Editor Anthony J. Firefighters Respond To 3-Alarm Fire At Pratt Industries In Shreveport, LA More than 100 firefighters from multiple agencies re- sponded to a fire at Pratt Industries’ plant at the Port of Caddo-Bossier in Shreveport, Louisiana on Saturday, March 15. Local media reported that bales of container- board were on fire and first responders were still working the scene some 24 hours later. High winds aided the fire’s spread which scorched 2.5 acres of land on the property. One fire fighter was taken to the hospital but was expect- ed to recover. Shreveport Fire Chief Clarence Reece said that Pratt Industrial had protocols in place and did an excellent job to contain the fire until fire fighters arrived. However, the wind and type of material burning—9,500 tons of paper bales—were a challenge, he said. Temperatures at the scene were reported to be above 900 degrees. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, ac- cording to media reports. A “soft” reopening of the plant took place on Sunday as fire fighters continued to monitor the site so that the smoldering remains did not reignite. The Port of Caddo-Bossier released a statement ex- pressing gratitude to the multiple agencies that worked together throughout the firefighting response: “Local first responders worked side by side, ensuring each other’s safety and executing their roles with preci- sion and commitment. Their unified efforts helped bring the situation under control.”
