At Texas Sedation Dental & Implant Center, we’ve put together the very best team of people so that you can be sure you’re in good hands and know that we truly care about your health and comfort. Our doctors are no exception. DR. KIRK HAMPTON, D.D.S. works at our Tyler location and is celebrating over 35 years in dentistry. He received his dental degree from Texas A&M College of Dentistry, formerly Baylor College of Dentistry, in 1984 and has been igniting smiles ever since. In August 2006, he was one of a select few doctors in Texas to be inducted into the Fellowship Academy of General Dentistry. He’s also a member of the Dallas County Dental Society, American Dental Association, Texas Dental Association, and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and he has attended the Center for Advanced Dental Education and the Accelerate Dental Learning Center of Atlanta. When he’s not working, Dr. Hampton has a farm in Texas that fills a lot of his free time. He loves what he does and is excited to be a part of your dental journey. DR.TIMOTHY J. GENGEL, D.M.D. works at our Longview location. He grew up in Bellevue, Nebraska, and after high school, he attended the University of Nebraska and graduated with a degree in biological sciences. Dentistry first took him to Glendale, Arizona, where he graduated with his doctor of dental medicine degree from Midwestern University before he finally moved here to EastTexas. In his spare time, Dr. Gengel likes running outdoors, enjoying sports, spending time at the lake, hiking, traveling, and having quality time with family and friends. He’s passionate about helping patients achieve optimal dental health while providing them with a relaxed experience. He’s committed to treating each person’s needs, but he
also knows the importance of helping them enjoy the process. He has a passion for keeping up with the newest research and technology in the field and dedicates much of his time to being a lifelong student through continuing education. DR. CANDACEYONG, D.D.S. and DR. ERIC VETTER, D.D.S. came to us as a dynamic duo by way of a husband and wife team and work at both our Longview and Tyler locations. They moved to East Texas from Glendale, where they attended dental school at Midwestern University. They met during dental school and were recently married in Sedona, Arizona. Dr. Vetter was raised in Southern California and completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, San Diego. He loves watching all professional sports and is an avid soccer player. Dr. Yong was raised in Omaha, Nebraska, and also attended the University of Southern California, San Diego for her undergraduate degree. She enjoys trying new foods and exploring the outdoors by hiking, kayaking, and camping. school, and they enjoy every aspect of dentistry.They both became IV sedation certified so they could offer patients a comfortable experience. LEAP INTO 2020 Facts About the Leap Year
Like the Olympics and presidential elections, leap years only occur once every four years, which is why many people look forward to Feb. 29. But there’s a lot that you might not know about this quirk on the calendar.

However, the most famous leapling is probably Superman. When you invent a super-being, you might as well give him a super-birthday. WHERE Anthony, Texas/New Mexico (a single town that straddles the two states’ borders), claims the title “Leap Year Capital of the World.” The city throws one massive birthday party for all leaplings but invites everyone to join the celebration. Two leapling neighbors from Anthony began the tradition in 1988, and it’s blossomed into a festival with thousands of participants every four years. WHY To keep the calendar in sync with Earth’s orbit around the sun, an extra day is added to it every four years. Earth takes exactly 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds to orbit the sun. Those extra hours add up over time, so another calendar day becomes necessary. But a leap year doesn’t occur every four years. Adding that extra day still doesn’t quite keep Earth on track, so the calendar skips leap years that occur during century years not divisible by 400. For example, 2000 was a leap year, but 2100 won’t be. WHO The odds of being born on Feb. 29 are 1 in 1,461. That means that of the roughly seven billion people in the world, only about five million of them are “leaplings.” The number of leaplings

It’s February, which means our brand-new year — and brand-new decade — is well underway. If you’re ready to make 2020 the year you build your best smile, whitening is a great way to achieve it. Stained or yellow teeth don’t necessarily mean they’re unhealthy, but we understand the boost of confidence a bright white smile can instill. Even the most diligent of brushers can get stains. This is because your teeth are made up of two layers: the inner dentin layer and the outer enamel layer. Enamel is a hard substance that protects your teeth, but when you put things in your mouth like food, coffee, and cigarettes, another layer forms over your enamel. This accumulation of foreign material is called pellicle film, and it can be cleaned away by consistent brushing and regular dental cleanings. But after several years, the pellicle layer works its way into the enamel, causing stains and yellowing. These deep stains are relatively harmless, but many people find they impede the smile they’re trying to achieve. This is when whitening works its magic. In their most basic forms, whiteners use chemicals to set off an oxidation reaction that breaks apart the stains, essentially bleaching them. You can achieve this by way of store-bought kits for at-home care, but the most effective method is to let a dental professional do it for you. At Texas Sedation Dental & Implant Center, we implement a precisely controlled use of carbamide and hydrogen peroxide so we can tailor the whitening to each particular patient and the color of their teeth. We also perform regular treatments like cleanings and cavity fillings before the whitening procedure to make sure it’s as effective as it can be. Contrary to the rumors that float around about whitening being bad for your teeth, the process is relatively harmless when executed by professionals. 1/2 cup dry white wine 1/4 cup lemon juice 8 oz cooked linguine

4 tbsp butter
4 tbsp olive oil

1 tbsp minced garlic 1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
1/4 cup parsley

1/2 tsp oregano
DIRECTIONS
1. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tbsp of butter with 2 tbsp of olive oil. Add garlic and cook for 2 minutes. 2. Add shrimp and oregano, stirring frequently until shrimp is pink. Remove shrimp from skillet. 3. Add wine and lemon juice to skillet and bring the mixture to a boil. 4. Stir in remaining butter and olive oil and cook until butter is melted. 5. Add cooked shrimp to skillet and cook for 1 minute, stirring occasionally. 6. In a serving bowl, top cooked linguine with shrimp mixture. Garnish with parsley and serve.

CREATE YOUR OWN ODYSSEY Mythical Adventures Await in the Mediterranean
One of the oldest stories inWestern literature is Homer’s “The Odyssey.”This epic poem tells the story of Odysseus and his long journey home after theTrojanWar. While Odysseus’ travels were fraught with mythical monsters and magic, many of the places he visited are said to be inspired by real islands in the Mediterranean. Even today, travelers flock to these islands looking for peace, adventure, and epic stories of their own. SICILY, ITALY One of the most popular stories in “The Odyssey” is the tale of Odysseus rescuing his crew from Polyphemus, a man-eating Cyclops. It’s said that Polyphemus made his home on what is now modern-day Sicily. Fortunately, there are no Cyclopes in Sicily today; there are only cultural festivals, world- class golf courses, and delicious food. GOZO, MALTA While Odysseus’ journey was perilous, he did enjoy one peaceful stop. Odysseus spent seven years on
the mythical island of Ogygia, home of the nymph Calypso. Historians suspect that Ogygia was Gaudos, now modern-day Gozo, Malta. Gozo is home to the Ggantija temples, which are older than the Egyptian pyramids. In addition to exploring its archaeological marvels, Gozo’s visitors can also enjoy snorkeling, horseback riding, and other memorable adventures. ITHACA, GREECE If you want to chart your own odyssey, make your final stop Odysseus’ home, the island of Ithaca. Covered in lush greenery and quaint villages, Ithaca is a wonderful place to relax at the end of your trip. Visitors can enjoy their morning coffee by a seaside cafe before lounging on a secluded beach for the rest of the day. It’s no wonder why Odysseus fought so hard to get back to Ithaca! With dozens of other islands to explore, the Mediterranean is the perfect place to plan your own odyssey — minus the mythical monsters, of course.
