CIPP update

Michelle Crook honoured through employee funded bench ON 29 January, the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals unveiled a bench in honour of past-chair and board member, Michelle Crook. CIPP employees and board funded the bench in Michelle’s honour through a charity week of fundraising which included a quiz, a guess-the-baby competition, and a cake sale from cakes kindly donated or baked by our staff. Speaking at the bench unveiling, Eira Hammond, current CIPP chair said: “The legacy Michelle has left the CIPP will make a long- term difference to the Institute, as well as the membership. She was instrumental in finding this wonderful building, and our home, ‘Goldfinger House’, CIPP’s head office. She worked hard behind the scenes for Individual Chartered Status, which I’m delighted we now have some Chartered Members appointed, following Michelle being awarded the first Individual Chartered Status at graduation last year. “I am honoured that today, due to the personal contributions of CIPP staff and board, we are recognising the legacy Michelle left with us by unveiling this lovely bench for CIPP colleagues to enjoy, probably more so during warmer weather, and somewhere where they can spend time thinking about the individual contribution we all make to this marvellous institute.” Michelle sadly and prematurely passed away after a short illness on 10 November 2016 whilst holding a position on the CIPP board, and as managing director for ESOS a thriving payroll outsourcing service company. In addition, Michelle was a volunteer for the Samaritans in Solihull.

Correction In the table on page 21 of Issue 37 (February), there were errors in the tax rate shown for both the £13,851–£24,000 band and the £44,274–£150,000 band of gross income. The rates should be 20% (not 19%) and 41% (not 14%) respectively. The Editor apologises for these typographical errors. ● Helen Hargreaves MSc ChFCIPPdip, associate director of policy and membership, CIPP ● John Stonestreet ChMCIPPdip, head of payroll and pensions, Essex Police Authority ● Karen Thomson MSc ChFCIPPdip FHEA, director – Group Payroll Services, Armstrong Watson LLP ● Neil Tonks ChMCIPPdip, legislation manager, MHR ● Ian Walters MSc ChFCIPP FHEA, learning and development director, SD Worx
