DAILY VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL (Continued from Page 18) booklets on how to survive during an atom bomb attack, and they are very worthy of our attention. Certainly if an A-bomb were dropped, many lives would be lost. So someone has suggested that we need a bulletin on how to die during an attack. This may seem grue some and it is realistic, and the Chris tian has the Book containing the rules on how to get ready to die. Many publishing houses with this pos sibility in mind have geared their D.Y. B.S. material to present in clear-cut, simple terms the plan of salvation, based upon the vicarious sacrifice of Jesus Christ. How can the Daily Vacation Bible School undertake such a tremen dous task? In the two weeks’ course, ten hours of Bible instruction are furnished through the media of Bible stories, memorization of Scripture verses, Bible drills, and Bible quizzes. Six hours of training in worship by song and prayer are offered. In addition, ten hours of experience in working and playing together as true Christians should are included. So here is a total of twenty-six hours—as much instruction as any Sunday school class provides in an entire year! Surely this is ample time to lead each pupil to Christ. What can be more worth-while than that? The Bible School is a carry-over for the message of the gospel for the young. By that I mean it comes between Christ mas and Easter, the great religious holi days of the church, and provides the bridge whereby the gospel of Christ can be kept ever fresh in the minds of the young people. As the story of the nativ ity and resurrection are related to the children again and again during D.V. B.S., their eyes are turned to the Cross and the empty tomb. If the teachers are alert, the Vacation Bible School can keep alive the soul saving story of Jesus Christ. By centering the message around Him, it recalls to mind what was learned at Easter and lays a foundation for the Christmas story. Now, if we were to abandon the D.V. B.S., we would miss one of the greatest opportunities for child evangelism. The D.V.B.S. has an appeal that reaches many children who do not come to Sun day schooh Such a program of worship, instruc tion, and expression, is greatly needed today. If the church does not afford the young people an opportunity to learn Christian principles, they will never know them, for the public schools do not teach them. With the influence of “ pro gressive” education gripping the educa tional system of our land, we see ideals and standards declining. The adults of tomorrow learn that we live in a pur poseless universe; nothing is stable, all ( Continued on Page 21) JUNE, 1951,

herself necessary milk and sent that money instead, that a world might know of a soon-coming Saviour and Lord. Thousands of others are continually sac rificing that souls might hear the Word of God, and turn to Him before it is too late. But actually revival has hardly start ed. Christ’s true church is on its knees in supplication for a dying world and unspiritual Christians. Christian youth, catching the vision, are recognizing the immediacy of the last call, and training hastily. “ Give us more time,” they plead, “ and we will go to the still unreached corners of the earth, that the witness may be established in all nations and the King be brought back!” “ If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” Jonah cried out to Nineveh against her wickedness; she repented, turned to God, and judgment was stayed. Why must we permit leaders to decide a na tion’s fate? As Christian laymen, why don’t we BEGIN NOW and wait before God on our faces, confessing our indi vidual sins as well as those of our na tion? Why don’t we gather together in earnest Christian groups and seek God’s forgiveness and intervention for our land and people? Why don’t we go to our knees and STAY THERE until God answers? If the churches in our communities are not interested in sponsoring such gatherings, why don’t we start our own? In one Eastern town, twenty sincere be lievers from five different churches meet together in a home; their own churches have no prayer meetings. In another town in the West, fifteen women started their own cottage prayer meeting after the pastor of the only church in the community dismissed their request for a weekly prayer service with the remark, “ The time is not ripe to pray.” Still others are meeting the challenge of the hour by gathering in small informal groups for an hour or two for the ex press purpose of seeking God with their whole heart, and interceding with Him. These, and many others like them, all feel that if we but turn to God with a great turning, He may, as in times past, defer judgment, and give us one last hour in which to send forth the mid night cry. Not long ago a ship was about to pull in the gangplank and loose its moorings when a frantic shout rent the air: “Wait for me!” The gangplank was lowered again and a breathless and frightened member of the crew leaped aboard, panic-stricken that almost he had been too late. Visiting a Jewish home

A LONE in the Jewish Department of fice, one of our missionaries felt deeply burdened for his own Jewish peo ple. He stopped all activity and fell on his knees, beseeching God to give a har vest of souls. After a considerable time of prayer, he rose to respond to a knock at the door. There stood an elderly Jew ish man, who was invited to come in. After some conversation, he indicated that he would like a Bible, both Old and New Testaments. Since our work in cludes the distribution of tracts, Gos pels, Testaments and Bibles, we were happy to comply with his request. Our visitor informed us that he had been reading both the Old and New Testaments for over twenty years. A terrible conflict was raging in his heart. An artist and playwright, he had come to Hollywood to produce his plays. Through fear of persecution from his family, he had refused to accept and acknowledge Christ as his Saviour. The words of Matthew 10:37-38 were quoted; and other Scriptures read, showing the link between Old and New Testaments. The missionary felt he should attempt to bring this soul to a decision, but the man wavered. Then the death of the un saved was described and he showed that he was somewhat shaken. The Scriptures regarding the resurrection and the hope in Christ were explained. Finally the man said, “ I must now decide and I will accept the Lord Jesus as my Sav iour.” Prayer was offered to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob that through the redeeming blood of the Son of God this one might be brought but of dark ness into the marvelous light of redeem ing grace. He accepted the Lord Jesus Christ that day and since he has enjoyed fellow ship in Bible study, in the office and in services. Several weeks ago he publicly gave his first testimony in our Sunday afternoon meeting in the Church of the Open Door Lower Auditorium. Pray for him.
