Another example of the school’s real-world orientation is its Tax Clinic, described as “a work-integrated learning initiative” by its director, Emer Mulligan. Run by tax students, in conjunction with advisers from the professional tax arena, the clinic seeks to help both students and marginalised communities – such as those who have experienced homelessness or domestic violence – to manage their tax affairs. “It’s been humbling, but we’ve also demonstrated a real need and identified a segment of our society that sometimes gets left behind,” shares Mulligan. Students’ participation in activities such as the

company partners’ involvement, from the creation of programme challenges that “simulate what it’s like in the workplace” to mentorship and internship opportunities. “For example, we have partnerships with Deloitte and PwC that provide real- world experience for both teaching and research,” continues Giblin, who is also a senior lecturer at the school. She goes on to underline the value of the school’s annual Business Summit event as “an opportunity to build connections with industry, social enterprises and other community organisations,” as well as to showcase the school’s latest research and initiatives.
