P anthers are expensive if you don’t believe us just ask David Tepper who has apparently agreed to buy the Carolina Panthers for an NFL-record $2.2 billion from team founder Jerry Richardson. According to people familiar with the situation, hedge fund manager David Tepper has agreed to purchase the Panthers. Tepper is currently part owner of the Steelers and founder and president of Appaloosa Management, a global hedge fund based in Miami. Because Tepper holds a five percent stake in the Steelers, his finances have already been vetted by the league, meaning it wouldn’t take much for NFL owners to approve the sale. First, Tepper would have to sell his minority ownership stake of the Steelers, and also get the approval purchase the Panthers in a vote at the upcoming NFL owners meeting week in Atlanta.
If successful the price tag for the Carolina Panthers would be the most ever paid for an NFL franchise, eclipsing the $1.4 billion for the purchase of the Buffalo Bills by the Pegula family in 2014.
