’TIS THE SEASON FOR BURGERS
ONE PERK OF OUR NEW OFFICE: TASTY NEIGHBORHOOD RESTAURANTS!
W hen I was a kid, my family was very thrifty. My mom stayed home with my sister and me until we started school, so we ate her cooking and rarely got meals out. When we did, our parents told us exactly what to order. One meal in particular was never on the approved list: cheeseburgers.
onions, and extra pickles. If I’m fixing one at home, I’ll always use Duke’s Mayonnaise, Wickles Pickles, and a real burger bun, not bread. That said, I’d rather have a burger from a restaurant than cook one myself. Dave and I just got a grill last year, and I haven’t quite mastered it! Plus, why slave over homemade burgers when we have
W.W. Cousins expand. On top of that, they are only a five-minute drive from our new office. I see a lot of W.W. Cousins burgers in my future! Jaggers, a burger joint created by Texas Roadhouse (which is headquartered here in Louisville), is even closer to Kaden Tower. They opened up during the COVID-19 pandemic against all odds and put out great food through their incredibly efficient drive-thru. I'll never forget the night when Libby and I were working late to oversee the move into our new office and we picked up Jaggers curbside delivery for ourselves and the moving team. It was my first time trying Jaggers, and the burgers were massive! They come with two patties and cost $6–$7.50 each. I customized my burger by ordering it with my favorite toppings, and it was absolutely delicious. W.W. Cousins and Jaggers are both great burger spots, but I know there are dozens more scattered across the city! Do you have a favorite I should try this summer? I polled my team to find out their top spots (read up on that on Pg. 2), and I’d love to hear your recommendations. Open the newsletter to learn how to share them!
so many great burger places here in Louisville? So far, one of the biggest perks of moving to our new office in Kaden Tower has been having two of those burger joints as neighbors: W.W. Cousins and Jaggers. W.W. Cousins has been here for as long as I can remember. Apparently, they’ve been in business since 1983! That’s no surprise because their burgers really are top-notch, especially with the signature Cousins Sauce and buns made fresh daily. It warmed my heart to see the community come together over those burgers and showW.W. Cousins so
This cheeseburger ban wasn’t because our parents were concerned about our health. It was a money thing! We had cheese at home that cost less than a nickel per slice, so our parents didn’t approve of paying the restaurant markup. If we wanted a cheeseburger, we could order a hamburger and add the cheese when we got back to the house!
That childhood lesson might be the reason why I don’t feel compelled to add cheese to my burgers today. I love a good burger, especially in the summertime, but I like it topped with mayo, grilled
much support during the COVID-19 pandemic. They were able to install a drive-thru and even open a second location! During a time when so many restaurants were struggling, I loved seeing

LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE Get the Most Out of Each Lightbulb
We’ve all stood in front of the lightbulb section at the home improvement store. There are so many to choose from. But most of the time, we just grab the one we knowwill fit in any given spot. We don’t always consider things like color temperature, brightness, wattage (outside of compatibility with lamps or sockets). However, the bulb you choose does matter. The type of light it puts out can dramatically change a room — and not just in appearance, but functionality, too. Consider the following: Working Spaces (Kitchen and Bathrooms) These rooms, more or less, are utility rooms. They serve specific functions. In the kitchen, you prepare meals and cook. Kids may do homework in the kitchen. In the bathroom, you get ready for work. You may choose outfits, put on makeup, groom yourself, and so on. In these rooms, you need to see detail. As such, brighter lightbulbs are essential. These bulbs give off 5,000–10,000 lumens and have a bright or cool white color temperature (the packaging may say 4,100 kelvins). Day lightbulbs
are a good option as well (5,000–6,000 kelvins). The type of bulb (incandescent, compact fluorescent, LED, halogen, etc.) isn’t as important as the first two features. A bright bulb that emits cool light will open up the room, allowing you to clearly see the job at hand. Living Spaces (Dining Rooms, Home Offices, Bedrooms, Reading Areas) These rooms are more casual than the utility spaces and don’t require as much light as in the kitchen or bathroom. These are rooms where you may be relaxing or need to be less energetic. Bright, white light is more of an “awake” light, but it’s not ideal when you’re just chilling out (or even working behind a computer screen in a home office). You want bulbs in the 2,000–6,000 lumen range that give off softer, warmer light around 2,700 kelvins. This type of light is just as the naming suggests —warmer. It gives the room a more inviting feeling. It’s easier on the eyes and looks more natural in these types of rooms. In the home office, warmer light helps balance the light emitted by monitors, which can be harder on the eyes. Softer, warmer light reduces eye strain. This is also why it’s ideal for reading areas!

You can share photos of your burgers or the name of your favorite burger place in town on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/EmeryLawOffice/. hand-trimmed, grass-fed beef burgers cooked to order. You can choose from five offerings including the Grind (a build-your-own option) and the B&B, which comes topped with brie, bacon, and smoked habanero jam. Andrea Whittam, Legal Assistant My husband and I love the burgers at Mussel & Burger Bar on Taylorsville Road in Jeffersontown. They have a wonderful selection of burgers for meat eaters from the Classic American Cheeseburger to other delicious toppings to change the taste up. What I love is that for us nonmeat eaters, they have a vegetarian burger made with beets, which is my favorite. Don't
This neighborhood bar keeps it simple with The Fab Five classic burgers and a few specialty burgers like the Southwestern Bambi with Jim Beam BBQ sauce, onion rings, and pepper jack cheese. Don’t miss the onion rings and spicy cheese balls while you’re there! Joel Franklin, Attorney Grind Burger Kitchen makes the best burgers in town.
This chef-owned gourmet burger joint has two locations and a commitment to creative flavors. Even more strikingly, it offers mussels and burgers side by side. Andrea’s review says it all! Libby Thorngate , Operations Manager I love Grind in NuLu — their burgers are amazing, but so are their Brussels sprouts! Another vote for Grind Burger Kitchen! The Brussels sprouts Libby loves are served with a brown butter vinaigrette.
Grind Burger Kitchen started out as a food truck in 2012. Today, its brick-and-mortar serves 1/3-pound,

3 REASONS TO SEPARATE YOUR CAR FROM
HAVE A LAUGH!
THE BEST GRILLED SUMMER VEGETABLES
SOCIAL MEDIA F acebook, Instagram, and Twitter already took over our daily lives — now they’re stealing the calendar, too! June 21 is National Selfie Day and World Social Media Day is June 30, so let’s talk about one place social media shouldn’t be: your car. Here are three reasons to keep your wheels and your Facebook account separate. 1. Using social media while driving is incredibly dangerous. When traffic cops search the road for impaired drivers, they look for people driving slowly (drunk drivers) or swerving into other lanes (folks on the phone). Distracted driving led to 3,142 deaths in 2019 alone, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and even a single text or post can prove deadly. As NHTSA puts it, “Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for five seconds. At 55 mph, that's like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed.” 2. If you end up in a car crash while using your phone, that will come back to bite you in court. You can’t hide the fact that you were posting while driving from the lawyers in your car crash case. When we file a suit, one of the things we always ask for are the phone records of the other driver to see if they were texting or talking on the phone at the time of the accident. A time-stamped social media post can also give you away and prove you were driving irresponsibly. 3. Posting on social media after a car crash — with good news OR bad — might hurt your personal injury case. If you’re in a car crash, you may be tempted to post on social media afterward to let friends and family know what happened. Unfortunately, this could lead to problems. If you wake up in pain the next morning, for example, your “I’m okay!” post could be used as evidence against you. It’s best to keep your crash, case, and recovery off of social media, just in case. If you really want to scratch that selfie itch, head to the Bluegrass Selfie Experience (BlueGrassSelfieExperience.com) with friends instead. You can put your phones away in the car, then whip them out for some incredible selfies against BSE’s fun, funky backdrops.
Contrary to popular belief, vegetables are delicious. Most of our parents just didn’t know how to prepare them well. This summer, revolutionize your cookout with a serving of delicious, colorful veggies. INGREDIENTS
• • • •
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1 1/2 tsp dried Italian seasoning
1 1/2 tsp garlic, minced
• 2 lbs assorted vegetables, trimmed and halved (asparagus, mushrooms, red onion, red bell peppers, baby carrots, and yellow squash are great on the grill) • 5 tbsp olive oil • 2 tbsp lemon juice • 1/4 cup parsley leaves, chopped
DIRECTIONS
1. In a small bowl, combine salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and garlic. 2. Brush vegetables with olive oil and place in a large bowl. Top with lemon juice and seasoning mixture. Toss to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes but no longer than 2 hours. 3. Prepare the grill at medium-high heat. 4. Grill vegetables in batches, cooking 3–5 minutes on each side until browned and tender. (Carrots will cook longer, 6–9 minutes per side.) 5. Remove from the grill, sprinkle with parsley, and serve hot.

Which songs make the cut? Ones that inspire. "I think people will be so surprised by how much they will push themselves when they're moved by the feeling of a song or how the music makes them feel,” she says. It doesn’t matter if it’s ambient electronic music or a lilting Johnny Cash tune, both of which can be found routinely on Hainby’s cycling playlists. MAKE IT THEMED Whether you’re obsessed with ‘90s pop, classic rock jams, or David Bowie, you can use a theme to create workout playlists you’ll love. This is a great trick pros like Peloton instructor Christine D’Ercole use. D’Ercole is beloved by many for her themed classes, which range from an indie rock beginners’ ride to a fan-favorite all ‘90s ride. She also has holiday-themed playlists, like the one for her Women’s History Month ride in March that featured only female artists.
Whether summer temperatures drive you to work outside or simply make you want to move indoors where the air conditioner is blasting, having an upbeat playlist can help you quickly pass the time and feel good, too. There’s no better way to learn how to put together a motivational playlist than to ask a pro. Peloton’s bikes and treadmills are wildly popular, but now, users are working out through their app because of the high-energy instructors, many of whom have become known for their amazing playlists. Here are two instructors’ tips to put together a killer playlist. MIX IT UP Instructor Leanne Hainsby is known for the eclectic, feel-good songs that keep people pedaling hard in her cycling classes. Hainsby credits her vast musical tastes to her time as a dancer, which expanded her playlist for workout music.
You can always hop onto Spotify and check out the Peloton page to see all of their instructors’ recent playlists. Use this for inspiration to create your own list or stream whichever compilation catches your attention for your next workout.
